Law & Order SVU, 30Rock Crossover BTS and Interviews with Ice-T & Richard Belzer

Here are videos with a behind the scenes look, and interviews with Ice-T and Richard Belzer, for their Law & Order SVU/30Rock crossover episode. The air date wasn’t listed with the promotional videos so if/when I find it, I’ll update the information here. Richard and Ice-T will be playing their SVU roles of Munch and Fin.

Note: The 30Rock episode aired February 3 and the episode is embedded below. Richard and Ice-T appear at about 12 minutes in. It wasn't really a "crossover" as one might expect, but their appearance was still enjoyable!

Law & Order SVU “Dirty” Recap & Review

All photos from NBC

Law & Order SVU “Dirty” was an episode that had nothing to do with a special victim. It also only featured about half of the regular cast. Missing in action was Chris Meloni (Stabler had the flu), Richard Belzer (no explanation for Munch’s absences) and BD Wong. Melissa Sagemiller, who is not one of the cast regulars, also did not appear. The only people who seem to appear every week is Ice-T and Dann Florek. I have no problem with Mariska carrying an episode on her own (she was great as always in this episode), but I have to admit that as a viewer, I sometimes feel cheated when I don’t see all the detectives working a case.

“Dirty” failed as an SVU case, as it was determined very early on that the victim wasn’t sexually assaulted. Still, that didn’t stop SVU from working it, even when the death of a Brooklyn ADA that initially looks like a suicide turns into a homicide, and with the ADA being suspected of stealing seized drug money. The ADA may have had a mental illness but I don't think that qualifies her as a special victim. And, the one time that Internal Affairs should show up and get involved, they are mysteriously nowhere to be found. The Feds do get involved in the case, but Benson steamrolls over them when she arrests Detective "Sunny" while Sunny is being questioned by the Feds. Could a detective get away with doing this in the real world? Granted, when Benson made the arrest, Sunny was not under arrest by the Feds, but can a detective just walk into a Federal office and cart someone off? It would be nice to see different sides of law enforcement actually work together for a change.

In addition to the non-SVU case and the missing cast members, the episode was also visually boring with what seemed like endless head shots filling the screen. This includes tattoo-faced man, who looked horrific when viewed on a 50+ inch HD television screen.

All in all, “Dirty” probably would have better fit a L&O case or even Criminal Intent, but it just did not work for me as an SVU case.

Here is the recap:

Detective Saliyah "Sunny" Qadri ( Shohreh Aghdashloo), searching for Brooklyn ADA Page Ferguson, hears she’s left hours ago yet her glasses are still on her desk. Sunny seems concerned. She finds her car is gone and her purse is still there. Sunny continues to track her down and finds her car, and she calls out to Page. She hears a sound and looks up to see Page flying off a building, crashing into the car.

Later, Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) arrives on the scene, along with ME Warner (Tamara Tunie). Stabler is laid up with the flu and is not there. Page appears to have been raped, cut, and they wonder if she was thrown off the building. It appears some items were taken from the crime scene.

Benson goes to the roof of the building from which Page fell and speaks with Sunny. Sunny says she removed nothing from the crime scene, and tells Benson she was there to look for Page. Benson gets on her about taking Page’s ID and registration. Benson wants to know why.

At SVU, Sunny explains that Page Ferguson is the unit chief for the major narcotic bureau and says Page feared Angel Rivera, a member of the Latin Kings who threatened Page in open court. Sunny suggests that Benson check Page’s files, and also says Page had no boyfriend. Her parents are dead and she has no husband She had breast cancer last year and the treatment almost killed her but she rallied. She had an office fling which ended with Page getting cuts and bruises. She did not know who the man was, and Sunny gave her a gun. Sunny is convinced that Rivera is behind it, and he is Rikers with other Latin Kings. Sunny describes the horrific manner in which he killed the Drexter family.

Later, Sunny further explains this crime to Fin (Ice-T) and Benson. Damon Merced flipped on Rivera and will testify against him and the trial starts in two days. She thinks with Page dead they will ask for a continuance. Fin finds that Page got a call from a burn phone 10 minutes before she left the building and Page was with her boss DDA Ian Wofford. They think the caller was someone she knew that she did not consider a threat. They traced where she drove to and then to her return and Benson wonders if someone was in the car with her. Captain Don Cragen (Dann Florek) is on the phone with someone from the press and it seems the press found out Page was an ADA. Benson does not think the Latin Kings did it and she thinks it is personal as she showed all the signs of a battered woman. Cragen tells her to talk to Rivera to cover her ass.
At Rikers Island, Benson and Sunny question Rivera (Doug Drucker), his attorney present. He denies any involvement. Benson gets a phone call and Sunny and Rivera trade threats. Benson tells Sunny that ME Warner has something and they leave.
At the morgue, Warner tells them Page's hands show no defensive wounds and she only had anti-depression drugs in her system. The cuts appear self inflicted and Warner thinks she is a cutter. She may have sodomized herself with a knife. She had a penknife that belonged to her father but no knife was found in the car or on the scene. Sunny denies taking the knife, but saw no one flee the scene. Warner thinks it is suicide. Benson suggests they talk to her boss who was with Page when she got the call to see where her head was. Sunny says DDA Ian Wofford is her boss too and Benson will have to talk to her by herself.
At DDA Wofford’s (Joe Urla) office, Benson asks him about the phone call Page received while in his office. He says she took the call, hung up, and ran out. He admits that Page is being investigated into her unit regarding missing drug money that was never logged in. The dealer they arrested claims the cops stole a lot of the money. Page, along with Detectives Sean Riggs, Michael Walden, and Sunny Qadri got the collar. Briggs and Walden passed polygraph tests, Page showed some deception and Sunny refused to take the test. He thinks Page and Sunny were in on it together and tells Benson to follow the money.
Back at SVU, Cragen shows Benson the New York Ledger with the headline “Nose Dive” and says the Brooklyn DA is cutting their losses so they leaked Page’s death as a suicide. Fin shows the surveillance tapes from Brooklyn office which tracked Page’s movements in the building, and then exiting the building and leaving the parking garage. It does not appear anyone else was in the vehicle. Benson says Page was drowning in debt, including medical bills. She paid off half of those bills from money orders purchased from a post office box in Red Hook and check cashing places all over the Bronx. Fin wonders, since Sunny refused the lie detector test, if she is dirty too. Benson says it’s time to talk to the rest of the unit about it. Fin traced the disposable phont used to lure out Page, and it was shipped to a store in mid town and he asked for the security tapes.

Later, Fin is at the store and is told that the original tapes were given to another cop that fits Sunny’s description.
At the office of the Kings County DA's conference room, Benson speaks with Detectives Riggs (Kenneth Johnson) and Walden (Mason Pettit). The deny involvement, but Walden seems slightly uncomfortable. They don’t seem to know with whom Page had the office romance. Walden adds that Page and Sunny were not getting along, and when Walden looks like he is going to explain, Riggs says to ask Sunny. Walden says maybe one of them had a guilty conscience, and Riggs retorts that Sunny would never cross the line. Benson gets a text message from Fin that says Sunny took the camera tapes. When Benson asks where Sunny is now, Walden says with the Feds.
At the office of the Feds, with Sunny being questioned and Assistant U.S. Attorney Christine Danielson (Gloria Reuben) present, Benson barges in and arrests Sunny. When Danielson objects, Benson says it is not up to her because Sunny tampered with the body and lied to the police and stole surveillance tapes. Danielson continues to object but Benson isn’t having any of it and takes Sunny away in cuffs.

At SVU in interrogation, Sunny says she found the phone was sold to a hood rat named Lakeisha Watkins. Benson asks what set Sunny off, but Sunny says there was nothing to confess, neither of them took the money. Sunny insists this is a set up. Benson accuses Sunny of being a crooked cop but Sunny denies everything, Benson asks why not take the polygraph, and Sunny says it was a slap in the face and if they thought she was guilty they would have to prove it. Taking the polygraph now is the only way to prove things right. Benson gives Sunny a hard look and then walks out of the room to talk with Danielson. Danielson says Sunny passed the poly and as Riggs and Walden also passed, this only leaves Page. Fin enters and says that Lakeisha Watkins has a record and seems to like knives. Danielson says to pick her up.

When Benson and Fin find Lakeisha, she is with a local snitch, Damon Merced. As Benson identifies herself as the police, Lakeisha comes at her with a knife and Benson moves to disable her. Merced holds a gun to Benson’s head, and Fin pulls out his gun and orders Merced to drop it. Quickly 2 other detectives are there and also yell for Merced to drop the gun. Merced drops it but Fin and the other cop wind up pointing their guns at each other until Riggs gets out of the car and gets them all to drop their guns. He said his local cops were moving a witness to a safe location. Benson says they came to question Lakeisha about Page’s murder since it was Lakeisha’s phone who lured Page out, and Benson wonders why Lakeisha is now there with Rivera’s rat. Riggs says he is taking Damon to court and if they have a problem with that to call the Brooklyn DA.

When Riggs gets back to his precinct with Benson following, he sees Sunny there waiting. She shows him photos of Page’s body. Sunny says someone drove page across state lines, tortured her, and threw her off the roof. She thinks Damon Merced did it. Riggs turns Damon over to SVU.
Meanwhile, at SVU, Fin is interrogating Lakeisha and Benson and Sunny question Damon. Damon knew that Riggs and Sunny were a couple and denies involvement. Afterwards, Sunny wants to question Riggs because she thinks he was beating Page. But Riggs was in the office at the time she went missing. If it was Damon, they don’t know how he would benefit by Page’s death. Fin says he got Riggs phone records and there were no calls from Lakeisha’s burn phone to Riggs. Since there was no evidence at the scene, Benson wonders if the killers were sitting in a heated car.

At the CSU garage, CSU Tech Judy (Caren Browning) says they found some blood belonging to the victim behind the driver’s seat and under the mat. If the killer forced Page into the back seat, she was probably placed on plastic. It looks like homicide. She has a faded toll receipt which shows blood, not belonging to the victims, at a toll booth at 2 AM. There are no hits on the blood in CODIS. Benson thinks they should get the camera footage from the toll booth for that time to find the killer.
Back at SVU, Fin and Benson are looking through the images from the toll booth camera, and Danielson enters. Fin says there is no sign of Page’s car – but then quickly sees Damon Merced driving Page’s car. Benson wonders why, as Page’s office was protecting him, why would he kill her? Danielson tells Benson to ask the rat bastard.
When Benson and Fin get to Damon’s location, Riggs and Sunny are already there. Fin sees the door has been kicked in, and they enter and find Damon and Lakeisha dead on the floor, both shot. Sunny accuses Riggs of killing them and they argue. Riggs walks out and Benson tells him not to go to far.

Later, with more investigators on the scene, Fin tells Sunny she should not be there. She suggests they check the dumpster, she got some info from the neighbor’s son. Fin talks to the boy, who says his dad is upset because he saw the man who dumped the gun. Fin says he will not let anything happen to her. Inside the apartment, there are many bullets but they believe there was only one shooter. Fin brings in the automatic weapon located in the dumpster. Fin told the boy not to talk and assures Benson he has it covered. Page’s penknife has also been located – in Lakeisha’s purse. Benson comments that they had him and they let him go, and she races out.

Back at SVU, Fin says the lab report shows the blood sample on the toll receipt belonged to Lakeisha. The kid at the apartment saw a Latin King dump the gun but they want to keep the kid out of it. As Damon and Lakeisha were in a secret location, someone had to feel the killer the address, and it is probably the same person who arranged Page’s murder. Benson looks at Merced’s record and the number of charges vacated, and it seems someone is looking out for him. Benson thinks it’s his handler, Sean Riggs. She also thinks that Damon lured Page out and Lakeisha cut of Page in the back seat and then later pushed her off the building to shut her up. Riggs may have let it slip about Page and the drug money and that he needed her to take the fall.

Later, Riggs comes into SVU interrogation with Benson and finds Danielson also there. Benson questions him about the Latin Kings finding his informant, and Danielson said Damon was his weakest link. He says he loved Page and said he could not go public with the relationship because she was the head of their unit. He never beat her. He said she bruised herself and self harming herself for years. He said she was in and out of therapy and constantly hurt herself but no one could tell her why. She had personality disorders and depression. Police thought Page was a battered woman, but stress triggered her need to cut and she said it relieved the pressure. She swore she would resign after the Rivera trial and focus on her heath. He took the polygraph so she would not have to, but said it didn’t matter in the end. Cragen bangs on the window and Benson and Danielson step out. He tells them that Angel Rivera had a visitor the same day Damon and Lakeisha got killed, and he shows them the information.

Later, at Rikers, Danielson and Benson speak with Rivera, who seems to think the charges against him will be dropped. But Benson says she came to throw away the key, that he and his girlfriend will be in there a long time. The police bring in his girlfriend Gina, who says they made her tell everything. Benson states that Rivera called Gina there yesterday and gave her the address of Damon and Lakeisha and told her which one of his Latin Kings was going to kill them. He denies is and says she is lying. Danielson said it is a tragedy that his kid will be born in prison. They tell him it doesn’t have to be that way, and ask him who told him where Damon and Lakeisha were hiding. Danielson says if he tells them, Gina will walk. He says that the bitch said if he cleaned up her mess, she would clean up his. Benson asks, “Which bitch?”

At Sunny’s apartment, Benson accuses her of lying, that Sunny did know Damon because she arrested him in ’95 and that he was her snitch and she bailed him out for years. Danielson serves Sunny with a warrant to search her apartment and the police enter with a dog. Sunny gets flip about the matter and says she took the cash and hoped they wouldn’t catch her. Benson says Sunny inserted herself into the investigation from the beginning, and that Page figured out Sunny stole the money and she ordered her to turn it in. Benson accuses Sunny of selling out Page for the drug money, but Sunny says she cannot prove that. She adds that Page owed her. Benson says that Sunny told her snitch that Page lifted the drug money and he killed her for it. Sunny asks her to as her why – but Benson says she doesn’t need to, Sunny is like every low life looking for an easy payday. The dog barks and moved to a wall and begins to sniff. Sunny picks up a candlestick and begins banging a hole into the wall with it and money appears. She says she and Page watched out for each other, and they had a deal. She says Page used her to make unit chief – her contacts, her snitches made her career. Sunny was supposed to be made captain but then Page gets sick and wanted to bail – for a man. Benson comments that Sunny was jealous, and Sunny says Page owed her and that she doesn’t walk until her debt is paid. She goes on to admit that she took the money, saying she earned it. Benson asks her if it was worth it, and Sunny tells her to talk to her in 10 years when Benson has nothing – no family, no future, and a dead career. Benson glares back at her and shakes her head, saying to Sunny that she is not her, that she is nothing like her. Sunny grins and asks then why is Benson so scared? As Danielson reads Sunny her rights, Sunny continues grinning at Benson, but then the smile falters and Benson continues to glare at Sunny..and we fade to black.

Law & Order SVU “Mask” Recap & Review

All photos from NBC

Law & Order SVU “Mask” featured guest star Jeremy Irons but thankfully they didn’t make him the designated pervert of the week. That doesn’t mean he didn’t have problems of his own. His character, Cap Jackson, has a clinic where he treats sex addicts, and he wrote a book about his own struggle with being a sex addict. He’s estranged from his daughter, who he learns has been attacked and raped by a masked man. He’s also afraid that years ago, while drunk, he raped his daughter. All these elements provide for a solid roadblock for Stabler in solving the crime. Jeremy Irons was excellent in his role of a doctor who wants to follow the rules to protect his patients, while struggling with his own demons and trying to find his daughter's attacker. Despite the creepy element to Cap Jackson’s past, Jeremy Irons made the character seem almost respectable and likable.

Without Irons, though, the episode would have been average. While Chris Meloni fans likely celebrated another episode with Stabler in the forefront (and that scene with him in a “wife-beater” t-shirt), the episode had a disjointed feel. Rather than have Benson and Stabler work together on the case all the way through, Stabler flitted between Fin, Huang, and Cragen, with a bit of ADA Hardwicke shoehorned in. I also don't understand why Benson was hanging out at the hospital the entire time - did she really need to be by this woman's bedside every minute? Which brings me to one scene that didn't sit well with me – the attack victim regains consciousness and immediately Benson is in her face, asking her potentially upsetting questions. I know that detectives like to get information as quickly as possible but I would have expected Benson to first make sure that the patient is stable enough to be able to handle questions.

Speaking of Benson, Mariska Hargitay seems to have reduced screen time lately. She’s wearing lot of layered, dark clothes and she appears to have gained some weight. Are you thinking what I’m thinking? I hate to start any rumors or speculation, but it’s almost impossible to NOT notice that something seems different. I’ve been getting a lot of emails from fans asking why there isn't as much Mariska in the last few episodes, which tells me it is not just my perception. I also can’t explain why Richard Belzer is conspicuously absent. I really miss the social commentary - and the sometimes dark comedy - that we get from John Munch. One never knows when tuning in to SVU which members of the credited regular cast will actually appear in the episode, and this inconsistency can be annoying to fans. Thankfully in "Mask" we had Jeremy Irons to make things interesting.

Here is the recap:
Two kids with a pair of camera binoculars see Debbie Shields (AJ Cook) being sexually assaulted. Her partner, Ann Jackson, returns home and also is attacked by the intruder wearing a mask. The kids call 911.

Later, Detectives Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) are at the scene. Fin (Ice-T) brings the kids over to the detectives, who look at a photo taken during the crime and see the man in the mask.

At the hospital, Benson speaks with Debbie, who is a doctor. Benson wants to get evidence from Debbie’s hands but Debbie wants to aid doctors in treating Ann. Debbie has received threats because of her work with the Tri-State Reproductive Institute.

At Tri-State, Fin and Stabler find that Debbie has found a way to create disease free embryos by combining the father’s sperm with two mothers’ eggs. They also are given a letter where Debbie was threatened for this work. Afterwards they speak with the man who wrote the letter and he has an alibi which checks out.
Back at SVU, they confer with Dr. Huang (BD Wong) who thinks the mask may have a ritualistic or ceremonial importance.

Back at the hospital, Stabler gives this information to Benson. Benson and Stabler speak with Debbie and show her the photo of the masked man. While talking, a man rushes up and asks if they are talking about Ann Jackson. He introduces himself as Cap Jackson (Jeremy Irons) and is Ann’s father and a doctor. He also finds Debbie is Ann’s partner. He is reluctant to talk about family issues and is more concerned about Ann’s recovery. He tells Debbie if there has to be a medical decision it is Debbie’s to make. They hear Ann made it through surgery. Outside the ICU, Debbie describes the attack to the detective with Cap also listening. She adds that the attacker said he would “cure her of Falmouth” and this phrase seems to strike a nerve with Cap.

When Cap walks out of the room, Stabler follows. Fin shows Stabler a police sketch from Richmond Virginia from previous attacks that matches the one in Ann and Debbie’s attack. Stabler asks what the phrase about Falmouth means. Cap explains that it means he raped the wrong woman, meaning Ann was the target. Cap can’t explain any further as he is a psychiatrist and cannot violate privilege. Stabler tries to get him to help him, as a father, but Cap cannot talk about his patients. He says he specializes in treating sex addicts.

Later, ADA Hardwicke (Melissa Sagemiller), along with Stabler, try to get information from Cap, his lawyer Lorna Scarry (Mariette Hartley) is present. Hardwicke tells them they found that Falmouth is the Cape Cod town where Cap’s family used to spend their summers. Stabler tries to get Cap to say which one of Cap’s patients is the rapist. Cap becomes incensed that Stabler thinks he does not care about Ann. He insists some people get better in his program. Stabler thinks that Cap’s silence means it IS a patient who is raping these women. As Stabler walks out of the room, Dr. Huang shows Stabler a book written by Cap called “Eros Run Amok”, his autobiography, and that Cap also was a sex addict. Huang introduces himself to Cap and they have mutual admiration for each other. Huang says sex addiction will get recognized as a real disease thanks to Cap’s efforts. Huang wants to talk to Cap, not about the rapist but about his daughter Ann.
Cap talks with Huang about his own experiences with sex addiction, and that his wife killed herself. He admits his problem kept Ann at a distance for 20 years; in his book he said the estrangement started the summer Ann was 16. He is reluctant to answer their questions and he leaves the room. Stabler and Huang follow, Huang showing Cap a book of Hindu gods and goddesses and the god of erotic love has a face like the attacker’s mask. The god had a power of spiritual redemption through sex. Huang brings up the issue about the rapist wanting to cure Ann of Falmouth but Cap still won’t go into it. They follow him into the elevator and continue to press him, accusing Cap of raping his daughter at Falmouth. Cap finally shouts back that he can’t remember, he thinks he did. He breaks down.
Back at the hospital with Ann, Debbie explains to Benson that Ann does not talk much about her childhood but suggests she talk to a childhood friend, Linda. Ann begins to wake up and Benson explains what happened to her. When Benson brings up Falmouth, Ann becomes very upset and begins seizing. Doctors race in to treat her.
Back at SVU, Stabler and Huang discuss the situation and Stabler will have Fin to try to track down Linda. Stabler asks about whether Huang was just flattering Cap to get him to talk, but Huang says sex addiction is real and that Cap is a pioneer. He says most sex addicts are not rapists but that some rapists may be acting out on a compulsion. Sex addicts who rape should go to jail. Huang also says a pattern is emerging; he sent the Richmond sketch to SVU nationwide and there are more victims which match the MO. The locations are all cities with sex addiction rehab centers. Stabler wonders if the perp checks into sex rehab, hears about the women who were raped, and then rapes them again to “redeem” them. Huang also thinks the perp is a narcissist, who are prone to sudden bursts of violence when things don't go according to plan. They can’t get the files from the clinics because of privilege. Stabler says he will stake out Cap Jackson’s center and tail anyone who walks out of there. Captain Cragen (Dann Florek) tells them there has been another attack.
Later, with Stabler and Cragen on the scene of this new attack, Holly, a stripper, describes her assault to Stabler and says that the man was wearing a mask and IDs the sketch of Ann’s attacker. She tells Stabler she was assaulted before by a professor in college. Her attacker today said she was an A+. She stabbed him on his forearm with a hidden knife. Stabler takes her knife to hopefully get a match on the blood. Cragen tells Stabler that Benson said Ann is in a medically induced coma. Cap is there and will not leave her bedside. Stabler tells Cragen to keep him off the grid for a while.

At the Jackson Clinic, there is a group session and Stabler is attending undercover – as a sex addict. He listens as one addict, Clay Gibson (Chris Meyer), talks about his addiction. The therapy leader Brett (Chandler Williams) gets on Stabler for rolling up his sleeves, telling him they have a modesty rule – long sleeves and long pants. Stabler is annoyed, saying what Clay is going is illegal yet they are getting on him (Stabler) for rolling up his sleeves.
Meanwhile, Cap is with Ann at the hospital and he speaks with Benson who tells him the rapist struck again. She tells him the rapist is using him to find other victims. Cap becomes upset, saying he spoke to his group just last week about what he did to Ann that night years ago. He describes the images of what happened which came back after 20 years. He said it kills him that he was never able to say he is sorry. But he still cannot talk about his patients, whatever they’ve done they are still human beings. As Cap talks about what his patients go through, back at the therapy session, the man who was the professor is talking, and another woman, Courtney (Lindsey Craft), and another man speak about their issues with sex addiction. Cap asks Benson if she can say some people aren't worth saving, and she says she can.
At therapy, Stabler signs up for chores for the group and the therapy leader pairs him up with Courtney as a “big sib” until he gets a sponsor. She says Stabler is the kind of guy she’d be banging within 10 minutes of meeting him before she got “clean.” She asks him if he is a cop, but he says he is an accountant. Therapy wraps up and the leader declares it bedtime. Stabler goes to his room and is told by one of his roommates that he can’t wear his sleveless (wife beater) t-shirt to sleep. One of the guys there gives him their standard issue sleepwear and Stabler notices a bandage on his arm. The guy has cuts all over and says it is part of his addiction, he used to hire prostitutes to cut him. He shows the cut on his arm is almost healed.
Back at SVU, Hardwicke confers with Cragen, who tells her they looked into the employment records for the other clinic in other cities and they came up empty. Cragen believes it is a patient. Stabler is supposed to call in and he snuck in his phone. They speak with him while he is doing his chores, looking for evidence. Courtney walks up to him and he quickly removes the phone earpiece from his ear.

Back at the hospital, Benson comes up to Debbie who is watching Ann from outside the ICU. Debbie tells her that Cap went to his clinic to check up on the sex addicts as they are a delicate bunch. Benson quickly gets on the phone.

Back at the clinic, Courtney asks Stabler if he is on the phone and he denies it, but then it vibrates from an incoming call. When he stops her hand from reaching for the phone, she says those are cop reflexes. She pulls out the phone and sees it is a call from Olivia and thinks it is a girlfriend. She comes on to him and teases him to get back the phone. She heads into another room and he follows her in. She closes the blinds and removes her shirt and really tries to push his buttons. He brings up his daughter’s addiction and reminds Courtney that she is clean, and she pulls away, calling him a walking douche bag. She hurries to get dressed as they hear someone coming and he pleads for his phone. She refuses. Clay Gibson walks in on them as Courtney leaves, saying he was looking for his shirt and group is starting early. He’s holding his arm funny.

At the group session, Clay accuses Stabler of wanting to do “gang bang” girl and then mentions she would take him to Nirvana. But Cap has arrived, and when Cap sits down for group session, he sees Stabler and Stabler quickly “introduces” himself and says Cap’s book changed his life. Cap looks stunned. Stabler goes on to compliment Cap’s courage and do the right thing moral code and that he is the reason why he is here. Cap welcomes him and says he is glad he is here.
After the session Cap stops Stabler and is upset he is there under false pretenses, saying that he is jeopardizing everything he is doing. Stabler asks if that is including Clay Gibson, and Cap says he does not know if the rapist is him. Stabler says to call another meeting and get whoever it is to admit what they did, and Cap says not with Stabler there. Stabler thinks Cap wants the rapist for himself and in the meantime more women get raped. Stabler says he can’t let that happen.

Back at SVU, Stabler reviews Gibson’s previous record and that his DNA is not on file but be believes he is Holly’s rapist. He thinks that based on Gibson’s use of the word Nirvana he is their man. Cap comes in and says Stabler is right, everything he has done was an attempt to run away from his own crime. Stabler tells him it is time to stop running, and a woman comes in and tells Cap it has been a long time. She is Ann’s old friend, Linda (Jennifer Roszell). Later, in an interview room with Cap, Stabler and Fin speaks with Linda. She says Ann did not tell her about what happened in Falmouth but she was there and said that they were skinny dipping and Cap came down. She said Cap was drunk and he stripped and jumped in and Ann got upset and went back up to the house. Cap is surprised that Ann was not there, but Linda said Cap came after her and there was no stopping him. She said they had sex on the dock, he did not have sex with Ann. He apologizes to her and she says she wanted to do it and she did not regret it. She said Ann stopped talking to him because Linda was Ann’s first love and it broke her heart that night and she blamed it all on Cap. Cap tells Stabler they should go and find the man that attacked his daughter.

Back at group therapy, Stabler is saying forearms are his thing and pinning women’s arms. Cap says they traced Stabler’s behavior to his father, Stabler adding his father beat him up every day. He knew it was coming when his father rolled up his sleeves. Cap begins to roll up his sleeves so that they all will to help Stabler with his therapy by doing so and showing Stabler “a little love” by shaking hands or hugging. But Gibson refuses to break the modesty code, and, with prodding, rolls up both sleeves and there is a tattoo on one arm – and no cuts.
Afterwards, Cap asks Stabler what they are missing. When Stabler mentions the other locations where the rapist struck, Cap realizes there is an overlapping computer system at those locations. He does not use that system, though, because Brett Kincaid does a good job with their security. When Stabler asks if it's Brett who does therapy who is also doing the computers, Cap gets a look of realization. He says the Brett was in the room when he talked about Ann. Cap punches the picture of Brett on the wall, and races to the women’s therapy session that Brett is supposed to be leading. But, when they get there, someone else is leading the group, and they are told Brett left because he was not feeling well. Stabler asks where Courtney is, and is told that she didn’t show. Stabler asks for Cap’s phone and he calls Courtney on the phone and calls Courtney. She is down the street at the cop bar she said Elliot suggested. He tells her to get out of there, and he did not send her there. He tells her to meet her at Rockefeller Center, but suddenly a man in the mask jumps Courtney and she screams.

Stabler and Cap run to the abandoned cop bar while the attacker has Courtney bound and her mouth covered with duct tape. The man says he is curing her and making her respectable. Stabler rushes in with Cap alongside and Stabler fights the attacker while Cap works to release Courtney. Stabler subdues the attacker and Cap pulls off the mask – it’s Brett. Cap sees the cut on his arm that Holly gave him, and says he hopes they lock him up for life. As Stabler takes Brett away Courtney comments that she knew he was a cop.

Back at the hospital, Stabler is in the ICU with Benson as Cap walks in. Stabler asks how is he, and Cap says the clinic is empty, his patients are all gone because he let a cop in. Stabler apologizes, and says some of those guys should be locked up but most of them Cap was helping. Cap comments that Ann hasn’t woken up yet, but when she does, he’ll be there. While Stabler and Benson watch, Cap walks into Ann’s room, with Debbie waiting at her bedside, handing her a cup of coffee. Stabler and Benson look on as we fade to black.

Law & Order Los Angeles Overhaul – Ulrich, Boone, Hall Are Out

Several sources are reporting that there is a major cast shake up at Law & Order Los Angeles. The story was broken by Deadline.com who reported that Skeet Ulrich (Detective Rex Winters), Megan Boone (DDA Lauren Stanton), and Regina Hall (DDA Evelyn Price) are all out.

You can read the stories here:

Shakeup On 'LOLA' - Two Actresses Out

More 'LOLA' Shakeup - Skeet Ulrich Out Too

In my opinion, this these are all good moves. I have been on the fence about Ulrich but it seemed clear to me that Hall and Boone did not fit the show. NBC has scheduled LOLA for return on February 8, 2011. While the series is currently filming episodes, I am not sure if the show will stick with that date, or when new cast members will appear. Stay tuned!

Update January 13, 2011; TV Guide reports:
Shakeup on Law & Order: Los Angeles: Skeet Ulrich Out, Alfred Molina Now Playing a Cop

Excerpt: “Molina, who currently plays Deputy District Attorney Ricardo Morales, will jump from the courtroom to the precinct beginning with episode 15. It will be revealed that Morales was an LAPD detective for 15 years, and when he becomes frustrated with the law, he decides to return to the force as a beat cop.”

Update January 18, 2011:
NBC postpones return of Law & Order LA; date of return TBD.

Law & Order SVU “Possessed” Recap & Review

All photos from NBC
Law & Order SVU “Possessed” covered the topic of the sexual abuse of children, and also touched on First Amendment issues where it involves “how to” books on how to commit a crime. There was a lot of attention given to the perverts of the week, but the episode seemed a little thin on addressing the topic of the rights to publish a pervert’s how to guide. Recently there was an issue with Amazon.com selling a how to book as described in this episode, and many people, including me, were sickened that any reputable bookseller would want to have anything to do with selling that type of content. The First Amendment does protect, in many cases, the publication of those types of books, but that doesn’t mean that bookstores are obligated to carry them or sell them. Things got even murkier in this case when Hardwicke was unsuccessful in establishing a link between the books and a recent group of crimes at the hand of a person who copied what he read in the book. It just seemed to me that they episode could have spent less time on the perverts and a little more time on the law by building a better case before taking it to court and covering the First Amendment issue.

I also found it odd that Daniel, while in prison, was allowed to easily lean over and whisper something to Larissa. Yes, I know they had been friends in the past, but he was still a prisoner and I thought prison security worked a little harder to keep some distance between prisoners and victims. I also wonder why Hardwicke didn’t seem to press Larissa on what Daniel told her. Ultimately that risked another girl being attacked and Larissa killing Underwood. And is it just me, or is Hardwicke becoming annoying? It makes me wonder if we will ever have an ADA that can work well with the SVU detectives and support their efforts, rather than be viewed as the roadblock of the week.

There are a few things that are constants in the Law & Order universe – it’s easy to get killed at the courthouse, and getting put in witness protection is as good as no protection at all (one usually ends up dead while under protection). It’s nice to know that there is another constant in this episode – that a person is likely to die in prison at the hands of another prisoner. Of course, in this episode, you just had to know that Balogh would find himself dead, only because they would need him later. Now maybe in New York prisoners kill each other all the time, then again, maybe the writers need to come up with a new plot device in order to create an interesting story.

(Note: Cab # 5Y62 appears in both “Pop” and “Possessed”, both episodes which aired on January 5. In “Pop”, it’s the cab driven by the killed boy’s uncle. In “Possessed”, it’s the cab that drops off Larissa Welsh at the SVU precinct. I guess that cab is the “SVU Express.”)

Here is the recap:
Patrick Binder comes to the apartment of his girlfriend Larissa Welsh to find her tied to a chair and unconscious, wearing underwear with the name “Brandy”. He is then beaten by a naked fat man wearing a mask. Detective Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) and Elliot Stabler (Chris Meloni) later arrive at the hospital to question the victims. Larissa is still unconscious from an overdose of rohipnol. She has many razor cuts on her, as her attacker shaved her from the neck on down. They question Patrick who describes her attacker. He says Larissa hated the name Brandy.
Back at SVU, Benson and Stabler, along with Munch (Richard Belzer) and Fin (Ice-T) discuss the case. They have no DNA but find the rapes match the MO of two others in Jersey and Connecticut, both little girls.

Fin questions one of the young victims and said her attacker showed her photos of Brandy, and he also said Brandy had a birthmark. Stabler speaks with the other young victim, Paula and she asks if he is testing her, that her attacker said people would test her into telling. Stabler says he can protect her. She asks what about the letter – and shows him a letter that she found under her pillow. She said “they” put it there and they call themselves “Coventry.” It is a photo of a heart logo with a messages that says they are watching her.

Back at SVU, Dr. Huang (BD Wong) says that these are underground pedophile symbols. Munch says they only use the word Coventry when then want to scare their victims. They watch a film of a young girl and Stabler notices Larissa has the same birthmark. CSU guy managed to get a print off the photo that was sent to Paula and it matches to Eldon Balogh (Devin Ratray). The police and detectives later descend on Balogh’s apartment and find a video of him with Larissa before Patrick had arrived. They also find many more videos. He also left his email account open so they open the files and see photos of Larissa at the hospital. Fin calls Benson and she races to Larissa’s room and finds that she has been taken for testing – and it was Balogh. She orders them to lock down the hospital and they all search for Larissa. Stabler find a locked door and security opens it. They find Larissa there, unconscious, and Balogh appears to have just attacked her. Stabler tackles him and beats him, and Fin pulls him off.
Later, Benson speaks with an outraged Larissa who is leaving the hospital. Benson says they caught him. Larissa finds that he took video. She admits this happened when she was a child – she was Brandy. She says people stare at her because they recognize her. She says perverts have that look in their eyes and they will never leave her alone. She said the man who attacker her was a fan, he broke in and shoved pills down her throat. He told her this is the happiest day of his life.

Back at SVU, Balogh admits to Stabler that it was the happiest day of his life, and he had been looking for her for years. He describes what he did in detail. He also describes what he did to the other young girls. He said it wasn’t rape, it was natural. He touches Stabler and Stabler is clearly creeped out by this. He said he is jealous of the old man and how lucky he was, and he didn’t mean to murder him. He said it was Underwood, he met him on the Internet and knew Brandy as a child and he just wanted him to tell him Brandy’s real name.

At the home of Orville Underwood, Benson and Stabler find him laying on the floor next to his bed. They call for help. He tells them it has always been this way ever since they accused him of raping that girl. He only gave Balogh Larissa’s real name because he said he would kill him. They realize that Underwood turned Larissa into Brandy.

At Brandy’s , Larissa tells Benson about her initial abduction and attack. Meanwhile. back at SVU, Fin tells the team that Larissa’s foster parents, Edward and Roberta Parker, had 7 other foster kids and they never reported Larissa missing. Larissa tells Benson about Daniel, another boy who was taken. She does not know what happened to him. Fin tells Stabler that later Larissa identified Underwood by his distinctive belt buckle and he was arrested and charged, but lack of physical evidence allowed him to be acquitted. Larissa tells Benson there were other girls before her but they were targeted for termination by Coventry. Fin tells Stabler that Underwood later became a lawyer fighting for the unjustly accused. Munch tells them that the lab found Orville’s DNA on the pillowcase found at Balogh’s house.
Fin and Stabler confront Underwood (David Patrick Kelly) about these facts and he says he was at Balogh’s place and “had the urge” so he decided to “peel the banana” (Stabler’s words). He reminds the detectives they need probable cause to hold him too much longer. ADA Hardwicke (Melissa Sagemiller) gets the detectives out of the room and tells them to release Underwood. He says they do not have enough. She also casually tells them Eldon Balogh was beaten to death last night in prison for bragging about raping Brandy and the other girls.
As Stabler walks Underwood out, the two trade words and Stabler tells him he hopes he dies a slow and painful death and to have a nice day. As Underwood moves toward a taxi, Larissa steps out of it. Benson and Stabler see this and pull Underwood off, and Larissa throws up on Stabler.

At SVU, Stabler, Benson and Larissa talk. They tell her Balogh was murdered in jail, and that they are working to get Underwood and ask for her help. They ask her about finding Daniel and count him as a new accuser. All she can remember is Daniel’s smile the day she got away.

Watching from the observation area. Dr. Huang says Larissa has build walls between the past and present. He says the videos were not available to prosecutors until 1996 and that viewing the images may trigger more memories.

Later, she watches one of the videos and Daniel is in one of them. She said it is like a dream, she was drugged. He just remembers the jars of peanut butter which is what Underwood fed them, when they were empty Daniel would bury them in the backyard and put notes to his parents in them. He called them wishing jars and if they prayed they might be found. She wore the leather wristband that he was wearing the day she got away and buried in a jar in the backyard of her foster home. She made a wish that Daniel might find it.

Later, forensics people, with Munch and Fin are at Larissa’s foster parent’s home digging up the yard. The jar is located. Back at the lab, they got 5 partial DNA matches from the DNA on the wristband. One belonged to a missing boy, Daniel Brooks, from 16 years ago. The same DNA popped more recently for crimes by Daniel Brooks who now owns an abandoned factory in lower Manhattan,
The detectives go to this warehouse and see a Coventry logo on the wall. Elsewhere in the building, Daniel (Brian Justin Crum) is watching them on surveillance and tells kids there with him that they have to go. He races out with a boy, Michael, but leaves a girl there. Stabler chases him and Daniel dangles Michael over a railing and tells Stabler to back off. Stabler tries to talk him down and Daniel pulls Michael off the railing.

At SVU in interrogation, Daniel speaks with Benson and Stabler. He denies knowing Underwood. They show him a photo and he said the kid in the picture is not him anymore. He says he was a victim but he is not any more.

Later, the detectives speak with Huang, who says Daniel’s abuse at his age was tantamount to brainwashing. He thinks turning from victim to victimizer was his way of taking control of his screwed up life. Fin tells bring in a box of items found at Underwood’s behind a panel, it’s many book about writing how tos for the peds. Fin says this garbage should be banned. I also seems that Balogh used one of the guides to attack Larissa and they can use it to get Underwood.

At a pre-trial hearing, Hardwicke uses the book, as how-to manuals. to establish a conspiracy. Judge Moredock (John Cullum) asks if Balogh can confirm this and Hardwicke says that Balogh is now dead. But Underwood argues that her case fails to meet the criteria of a conspiracy. Moredock asks for 15 minutes to review the facts. Later, he returns and says that despite his contempt for the defendant, he grants a request for dismissal. He tells Hardwicke to spend her energy building a prima facie case for her charges as she can’t make the connection needed between the defendant and the co- conspirator who now cannot speak for himself. Larissa tells Hardwicke they have to get Daniel to testify , and she asks to talk to Daniel.

At Rikers Island, Hardwicke and Larissa visit with Daniel. He seems angry, saying that she never came back for him and she didn’t try hard enough. She tells them what he is doing with the kids and he seems to think this is a way to share his love. She tries to explain how Underwood spoiled them and they have to put him away and that he deserves to be punished. He says they are broken and nothing van fix them, it’s been 15 years and asks if she is fixed yet. He whispers something into her ear and leaves.
Back at SVU, Stabler says it is over and they should lick their wounds and move on. Stabler gets a phone call telling him that a girl named Brandy barged into Underwood home with a gun and then the line went dead. They arrive at Underwood’s to find police on the scene. As they stand outside a door, they hear talking, then gunshots. They enter to see Larissa standing at the foot of Underwood’s bed, holding a gun. Underwood has been shot once in the head and once in the chest. She drops the gun. They hear the sound of a young girl crying and they find her in the bathtub. Larissa said that at Rikers, Daniel said Underwood was still doing it.

Later, as Larissa walks out with the young girl who is being taken to an ambulance, Stabler asks Hardwicke what she wants to do. Hardwicke says Larissa used deadly force to stop Underwood from raping the girl, which is defense of a third person – Larissa walks. Stabler says it works for him. Larissa asks them if they are going to arrest her and Benson says it is over. Larissa says, maybe, and we fade to black.
