Oh wow! Sounds awesome!

So they are rotating the ADA spot with Melissa Sagemiller, or is Sagemiller out of the cast?

I didn't think Stephanie would ever return. She enjoys being Mrs.Bobby Flay.So I guess they must have offered her and Diana Neal more money.
Of course I like them both.I presume this move was made again to draw in disaffected fans, fans disaffected by Meloni's departure and Hargitay's gradual withdrawl from the series.

Didn't Stephanie leave the first time because of the work schedule. I can't really see it being any different. Of course the number episodes hasn't been revealed yet so that might explain it.

Of course you have to wonder how they can possibly write Alex off the show again. After she got what was IMO a satisfying sendoff for her last time.

Eh, whatever. I'll just be glad to see the court room element brought back. I'm sure they'll find a way just like they did with Casey last season. And having Casey back will be great as well.

Though I'm wondering if they're going to do with Alex and Casey what they did with Morales & Dekker on law and order la.

They seem to be trying to tie down some familiar faces to try and make the absence of Chris Meloni less obvious. It's good news though - I like the both of them. While we're bringing back familiar faces and the courtroom element, I'd love to see Judith Light again.

Many reports accompanying this news are saying that Mariska will be back for all 22 episodes and not just the first 13 as was first reported. It will apparently be in a supporting capacity, though.

They never reported that Mariska would only be in 13 episodes. The initial reports (before it was announced Meloni was leaving) said that Benson would be paired with Stabler for 13 episodes and then promoted to a supervisory position. It never said she would not appear in any more episodes. I think they realized this caused some confusion with some fans so I think they are trying to make sure everyone understands that Mariska is in it all season long.

It certainly caused confusion, I was confused! I had definitely read that she was leaving after 13 episodes - I probably got that from reading second-hand reports written by people who were equally as confused.

who are they?
Are the good?
Is this a good thing for longterm fans?

Stephanie played ADA Alex Cabot, Diane Neal played ADA Casey Novak. Yes they are good and they have always been very popular with Law & Order SVU - and Law & Order brand fans.

This is the best news I've heard since Meloni left. Cabot's always been my favorite since I first started watching back in high school. I literally cried when I thought she died in "Loss," I don't think a TV show has ever made me do that before or since ("Ghost" came close). I'm just on pins and needles because I know Stephanie's not going to do this forever and I pray to God they don't bring her back just to kill her off or something. With the way they wrote out Paxton I wouldn't put it past the writers. If they actually do something like that I swear to God I'll never watch SVU again. I don't know how many more good send-offs they have in their bag of tricks. And even with March and Neal, they absolutely have to have better writers because not even Cabot or Novak could have saved an episode like "Wet" or "Spectacle."

BTW any word on whether BD Wong's coming back?

Who is Paxton?

Laura said...

Sonya Paxton, the kind of bitchy older ADA who came to court drunk one time and hated Stabler. They brought her back for a few episodes last season but had her killed in a bathroom by a perp. Can't say I was particularly sad to see her go, but I will be absolutely heartbroken if they do something like that with Alex.

Laura, I suspect that as BD is going to be in the new NBC series "Awake" that we won't see him on SVU unless Awake flops. BD's name wasn't mentioned as being part of the returning cast for season 13 but if things don't work out for the new series...who knows?

Janet - Paxton is ADA Sonja Paxton, played by Christine Lahti, who came in for a 4 or 5 episode arc in season 11 and then she returned for I think two episodes in season 12, only to be killed off. She and Stabler were butting heads quite a bit in season 11 and she had a drinking problem, which was made very obvious when she came to court one day intoxicated.

Not too surprising, makes sense that with new faces like Pino, Giddish, and maybe a new shrink coming in, plus Hargitay's diminished role in the latter half, they'd bring back a couple of old faces to try and balance it out. Now let's hope they can afford to have more than 3 of any of these people in a given people.

I actually think season 13 will be a good year for SVU. Not like they had much more room to fall after last season, but I have confidence in Leight.

I agree, this is a smart move to soften the blow of Meloni's departure. I liked both Stephanie and Diane so this should work out well. It could also make the transition to Pino and Kellie smoother. These aren't very big names and the show needs people like Stephanie and Diane to kep the long time fans coming back.

Laura said...

The only way this could be better is if they throw in Judith Light. They could have Alex sitting first chair, Casey second chair, Benson on standby in the back, and Donnelly presiding over the courtroom. Or, even better, they could have legal aid go on strike like they did in an episode on the original and Casey go up against Alex as a defense attorney. Cabot v. Novak would make for an extremely good episode.

sirmikelogan said...

Only if Kim Greyleck is the judge.

Alicja Buczkowska said...

Wait, if Benson is promoted to a supervisor position, then what rank will she be? Because Dan Florek and Belzer are both coming back, and their characters are supervisors (Munch to some extent, I think he's the sergeant).

janethyland said...

Tanks for answering.
I wonder if these ADA's will be more than eye candy. They do sound different as if they have character in their own right.

Ol Cranky said...

Am I the only one offended by bringing back Novack in the DA's office? The character was disbarred for prosecutorial misconduct so every case on which she worked for the prosecution would be tainted by default.

I know this is TV but this is the stuff of outrageous soap opera land.

I'm glad to hear that Stephanie and Diane are returning for the upcoming season. By the way, thanks for clarifying that Mariska will be with the show for the entire season. As were others, I thought she was gone after 13 episodes.
