Law & Order SVU “The Things We Have To Lose” Recap & Review

The season finale –  the season cut short because of the COVID-19 pandemic – was a wrap up/update of stories that took place earlier in the season. Despite the fact that this wasn’t supposed to be the season finale, it worked very well as a close to the record setting season 21. It takes a lot to shock me anymore with SVU but one thing happened that did really surprise me: Fin shoots someone dead. More on this later.

Before I recap this episode, I would like to thank everyone involved with Law & Order SVU for a great season. Many people invest a lot of time and hard work into writing, acting, and the production of each episode. The subject matter is tough and it must be very hard to come up with new ideas each week. If I didn’t like this show I wouldn’t waste any time in watching AND recapping the episode. So, while some weeks it sounds like I am less than thrilled with an episode, I still appreciate the work that goes into each and every minute of it. I’m looking forward to next season.

The trial of Sir Toby Moore ( from the season 21 premiere “I’m Going To Make You A Star” ) is trying to get off the ground, and Carisi is hitting brick walls. Elana Barth – former judge and now a defense attorney – has fully turned to the dark side and uses every tactic at her disposal to defend her sleazy client. Conveniently, Sir Toby Moore keeps having medical problems, keeping him out of the courtroom and delaying his trial. Peter Scanavino did a superb job in showing Carisi’s frustration and his anger when constantly faced with roadblock after roadblock, including going so far as to throw the judges’ own words back at him. We didn’t get the pleasure of actually seeing Ian McShane reprise his role in this episode, we only saw his face appearing in news stories about Sir Toby. Such a shame; having him appear would have been a real treat. But, as Sir Toby Moore isn’t dead – yet – we can only hope that maybe some time next season that he’ll make a real appearance to answer for his crimes.

Carisi is still getting his footing as an ADA, but it surprised me a bit that he waited until witness preparation to warn Pilar that she, and her family or friends, shouldn’t be talking about the case to anyone, even people who claim to be reporters. If Pilar wonders how old photos of her got into the hands of the defense, it’s likely because it seemed she wasn’t given any warning that these kinds of dirty tactics could happen. Carisi learned a lesson the hard way.  While Carisi preps the witnesses, Benson gets to role play as defense attorney, and manages to get out a tidbit of information that Carisi didn’t get previously. Benson to the rescue!

I used to really enjoy Jenna Stern as Elana Barth but now I loathe her character.  This is typical for defense attorneys in the Law & Order universe, it is a prerequisite that they be the lowest form of scum.  (Okay, I still enjoy Jenna Stern. She does a great job making me dislike Barth.)

Lakira’s story first unfolded in “At Midnight In Manhattan”. In this current episode, Lakira sees some semblance of justice, but sadly only after one of her friends is murdered by Paul Davies when he makes a careless mistake in disposing of evidence. But, this would not have happened to begin with had Lakira not sold her silence for Paul Davies in exchange for a fur coat, a new purse, and rent money.  Kat was persistent and she got her man in the end.

Joelle’s story also began in “At Midnight In Manhattan”.   Things takes a tragic turn when her abusive husband Leon is released from prison, and he’s not interested in playing by the conditions of his parole. Fin uses poor judgment by not reporting to Leon's parole officer that Leon is violating by making contact with his son and using him to pass messages to Joelle, and Joelle resists Fin’s assistance.  Had Fin reported it despite Joelle's concerns, Leon would have likely been sent back to prison, avoiding the entire stand-off in Joelle’s apartment. It was a shock to see Fin draw his weapon and then quickly shoot Leon when it appears that Leon was getting ready to harm his own son. This was probably the most intense moments of drama this entire season.   This story alone would have been an excellent stand alone Fin-centric episode.   This story may not be over as Joelle is now suing Fin for Leon's wrongful death.

We first learned the story of Ivy Bucci in the episodes "Can’t Be Held Accountable" and "Must Be Held Accountable". Ivy continues to be a problem child. Despite her young age, she stays out all night, hangs around older men, and does coke. Her mother, Donna, isn’t much of a role model for her daughter. Donna begs Rollins to get involved, and Rollins agrees. I chuckled when Benson explains to Rollins how the matter should be handled, and when it’s clear Rollins still wants to find Ivy, Benson says “Because you’re the only one who can save her.” Usually this Benson’s job to save every victim!  Benson also gives the advice to Rollins to dish out some “tough love" to Ivy…and then Rollins proceeds to give Ivy the easy way out. Of course, it was a foregone conclusion that Ivy would wind up in trouble again, and this time, Rollins lets her stew in a holding cell overnight.  When it came down to Ivy going in front of the judge, Rollins explains Ivy’s history with Steve Getz and the judge softens her judgment. Still, the judge leaves things open so Ivy is not off the hook if she gets in trouble in the future.

There were so many things going on in this episode that at one point I thought there were TOO many things going on. Both Sir Toby's and Joelle's story could have been a standalone episodes. Still, as a wrap to the season, it felt right and was very well executed.

On a side note, there were a lot of unusual camera angles in this episode – a lot of shots from a skewed or low perspective. In some cases, these angles meant some things were in the way of the shot, something which I find annoying when done too frequently. (Some of the photos used for this recap are examples of this style.)

Here is the recap:

Flashbacks: the “MeToo” protesters in the courthouse hall; Joelle being attacked by her husband, Lakira being tossed out of a car, Ivy Bucci and Steve Getz; Sir Toby’s behaviors; more of the “MeToo” protesters.

Benson stands in Times Square, watching the news of Sir Toby’s anticipated criminal trial on the big screen, and Rollins watches the same footage on her phone while walking in the park. In the squad room, Fin and Kat watch news coverage of Elana Barth as she defends Sir Toby to the press. Kat comments to Fin that she thought he was done when they arrested him. Fin explains that cases like this, even when they are over, they are not over.

Elsewhere, Ivy comes into her apartment and her mother Donna, rushes over to her. Donna argues with her about where she has been, and Ivy claims she was at the library, clearly not dressed for the library. Donna says Ivy can’t be out all night as she’s 16, and when Ivy taunts that her mother can’t stop her, Donna grounds her.

On the courthouse steps, Barth continues to defends Sir Toby, saying the relationships were symbiotic and consensual. Benson, standing nearby with Carisi, asks what happened to Barth, and Carisi explains its money – 9 months and delays, motions and private investigators, she’s getting rich running out the clock. Benson asks how are Amelia and Pilar and other victims holding up, and Carisi replies not great, their lives are on hold, they are stressed, and it takes its toll. Benson asks about him, and Carisi says they are letting him take the lead on this – Benson says if something goes wrong – Carisi says their fingerprints won’t be anywhere near it. When Barth is asked if she is calling the women liars, Barth replies that is for a jury to decide, but says in this heated climate where men's reputations can be destroyed overnight, how many innocent men have been convicted in the name of the “MeToo” movement? Benson shakes her head.

Meanwhile, Joelle opens the door and greets Fin, who says he is just checking in on her and Andre. She says they are alright. Fin comments they didn’t tell her that her husband Leon is getting paroled tomorrow. She looks stunned and counters that he got a year. Fin explains it was a split sentence – he did 6 months in and the other six months in a halfway house on probation. She asks if that means he can just come by, and Fin replies no, her order of protection is good for a year. She hopes so. She adds he has been sending gifts to Andre – notes to give to her. She hands him the note and Fin reads “Joelle, we need to talk.” Fin states he needs to show the note to his parole officer, but she grabs the note back and tells Fin not to do that, she doesn’t want Andre caught in the middle. Andre runs in and tells Fin to “think fast” and he throws a basketball at him, which Fin easily catches. As Fin smiles, Andre says his dad sent him that and he said he is going to take him out for ice cream. Fin hands him back the basketball as Joelle gets a worried expression.

Law & Order SVU “I’m Going To Make You A Star” Recap & Review

Photo by: Virginia Sherwood/NBC 2019 NBCUniversal Media, LLC

The record-breaking season 21 premiere of Law & Order SVU was jam-packed with changes for the SVU and it portends an interesting season. By beginning the episode in a bar that’s showing “Gunsmoke” on television - and panning away - it symbolizes the torch being passed to SVU, which now holds the record for the most number of seasons (21) for a prime-time drama in the U.S. Here’s some of the big changes that transpired in this episode:

1. Sonny Carisi now works as an ADA for new Special Victims Unit Bureau Chief Vanessa Hadid.
2. Fin and Rollins are now the lone SVU detective pair (until such time that someone else is added, if that ever happens)
3. Judge Barth has stepped down and is now in private practice.
4. Chief Dodds gets moved to Staten Island to “ride point” for the Traffic and Pedestrian Safety Task Force as the “powers that be have decided [he] can’t be trusted to work with the DA’s office going forward.”
5. Olivia Benson is promoted to Captain, a condition Dodds made for his move to Staten Island.

This is a lot to absorb in one episode, but it’s better it was done all at once. Like ripping off a band aid, it’s best to uncover these changes right away so the show can quickly get some fresh air and heal. Warren Leight has returned as showrunner and it’s obvious in many good ways.

Judge Barth moving into private practice allows Barth to be a thorn in SVU’s side in a different capacity, a nice prospect for fan favorite Jenna Stern.  Fin and Rollins becoming the only detective pairing could get old fast – it already felt a little tired in this episode – so hopefully they will add someone quickly to bring a spark into the detective team. Dodds getting exiled to Staten Island was a logical move as he’s been making quite a few waves for One PP over the years and it was just a matter of time before he wore out his welcome. Law & Order fans will recall that Mike Logan was sent to Staten Island but resurfaced in the Law & Order movie “Exiled” and then in Law & Order Criminal Intent, so I keep the hopes that Dodds will make a return somehow to the SVU universe. Peter Gallagher was a great addition to the series and I would be saddened if this was the last we see of him.

Carisi’s move to the DA’s office may require some time for adjustment, for him AND for fans. I don’t know what the hiring qualifications are for a real ADA in Manhattan, but I would think some first-hand trial experience would be required. Carisi admits he has none. While we did see him do some close work with Barba in the past, he did zero work with Peter Stone, as far as I can recall. He’s thrown into the deep end right away in liaising with the SVU for a case involving a very powerful man – Sir Tobias Moore - who has deep connections with the DA’s office and other influential people. It seems Carisi’s hiring was done for the DA’s office to get an “in” with the SVU. Did new Bureau Chief Hadid assign Carisi to Toby’s case in the hopes he would unknowingly give her a heads up so she could counter what SVU was doing, or that Carisi would somehow bungle the case and Sir Toby would not be prosecuted? Hadid is too quick to threaten Carisi with being fired when the SVU didn’t clue him into Toby’s arrest, so she's not trustworthy right out of the gate. Lucky for Carisi, the case seems to be working out in the prosecution’s favor. But what other ulterior motives for hiring Carisi does Hadid have and will she later use Carisi as a pawn to make trouble for Benson? Regardless, Carisi will need some time to learn his new job and navigate internal politics. It may take time for his colleagues – and for fans - to find him credible in this role.  I admit that I'm more willing to see Peter Scanavino take on this role than have to "break in" another new ADA cast member, and I believe Peter can do the job nicely.

Benson being promoted to Captain was a natural progression for her character. I suspect there will be many more challenges for her – both personal and political - in her new position, and without an ally like Chief Dodds there to help her navigate the politics of One PP, things could get messy.

The cast photos in the opening sequence have been “refreshed” and they look great. Overall, I liked the feel of the episode as they used various different locations outside the squad room to help bring energy and bring the story to life.

The case itself was a bit of a disappointment. A ripped-from-the-headlines story (Harvey Weinstein), it didn’t seem like it took much time to go from accusation to the trial. This was one of those stories that could have easily taken two episodes to cover. I fully understand we’re talking about a show that usually tells a story in 40 minutes of screen time, but for how long the Weinstein story played out, a two-episode story – and not necessarily two consecutive episodes – would have made the story and its message more powerful. Ian McShane was well cast and played the creepy sexual predator like it was second nature (which is a little unsettling when you think about that). This was a fantastic start to the season and I’m looking forward to more of season 21!

As side note – I’ve received a few emails asking if I will be recapping the information given on the new Law & Order SVU podcasts. I likely won’t have time to listen to the podcasts - at least not right away – and already barely have the time to do the episode recap/review.  I wouldn't be listening to the podcast before I write my review anyway, as I want to review each episode based on the story as it has aired without any other side commentary influencing my opinion.  If anyone wants to add any feedback they have from the podcasts, feel free to add them in the comments on each episode blog post.

Here is the recap:

“Gunsmoke” is playing on a TV in The Beekman Pub while Benson supervises the hanging of a banner that says “we will miss you.” Chief Dodds comments that he sees she spares no expense, and Benson quips it’s not like they throw a lot of parties. Meanwhile, at SVU with Rollins, he is packing his things. He’s nervous about his “big leap”. She invites him for one last drink.

Meanwhile, Pilar Reyes waits outside the office of Sir Tobias “Toby” Moore, the CEO of Picflix, watching a video of him talking to a large group of people. His assistant Cindy enters and said Toby is on a call and will be there in two minutes. As she preens, we see that Toby is watching her via hidden camera. The assistant brings Pilar into his office, and he quickly dispatches Cindy. Toby fawns over her and then suggests to start the audition. He walks her through what he wants.

Elsewhere, Carisi and Rollins walk to the pub. He knows he is a long way from doing a trial but has practiced Barba’s summations in front of a mirror. As they enter, Carisi finds he is walking into a surprise party, with Benson, Fin and Dodds in the forefront.

Back at Toby’s the audition continues and Toby doesn’t like her performance. He coaches her but then gives her a drink to relax.

Back at the pub, Benson announces that Dodds told her to check the paperwork, but there was no mistake, as of midnight tonight, Carisi is…and Fin finishes that he is passing over to The Dark Side. Everyone laughs, and Benson finishes that Carisi will be bringing his charm and expertise to the DA’s Special Victims Unit under Bureau Chief Hadid. Dodds jokes to Hadid that Carisi is her problem now, and she returns with a quip about a 90 day return policy.

Meanwhile, Toby isn’t thrilled with Pilar’s performance and continues to coach her, but wants her to take off her blouse. She stunned and says she is not comfortable with that. He puts great pressure on her, ordering her to take her blouse off – NOW.

The next day at SVU, as Benson and Rollins arrive, an officer explains that Pilar Reyes was driven over from the One-One, who says she was assaulted by a media bigwig, Sir Tobias Moore. In the interview room, Pilar explains to Benson and Rollins how she was assaulted. She kicked him but he blocked her way, and then forced her to watch him finish all over the couch, the lampshade, etc.

At the office of Bureau Chief Vanessa Hadid, at One Hogan Place on Saturday, August 10, Benson and Chief Dodds discuss the allegations against Toby with Hadid, who adds it is her first month and Carisi’s first day. They discuss Pilar, who Benson says is credible. There were no witnesses, he made sure the office was empty. They are doing due diligence. Dodds asks for warrants for the screen test and couch, his whole office. Hadid wants them to vet Pilar more but Benson stands by Pilar. Hadid says Toby will say she is making this up, and makes Carisi the riding ADA.

As Benson walks through the courthouse main hall, she is on the phone with Fin, telling him to take Rollins with him. She hangs up and comments to Dodds that Hadid seems reluctant. He thinks she is astute; if the case blows up, it won’t touch her. Benson is glad she put Carisi on the case, saying he is “one of us.” Dodds reminds her “WAS”, saying Carisi works there now.

Law & Order SVU “I'm Going To Make You A Star” Sneak Peeks (Transcript)

Until someone can upload the 2 sneak peeks from the season 21 premiere of Law & Order SVU, “I'm Going To Make You A Star”, we’ll have to settle for a transcript! (If the videos become available I will post them here.) This episode will air on Thursday, September 26, 2019 at 10PM ET on NBC.

My recap and review of Law & Order SVU “I’m Going To Make You A Star” can be found at this link.

Clip 1
Benson and Rollins walk into SVU to a waiting police officer.

Benson: Hey, you drove the victim over from the One-One?
Officer: Pilar Reyes, says she was assaulted by some media bigwig and my sergeant told me after the Weinstein mess not to put his name on the radio.
Benson: Thank you, What’s his name?
Officer, having trouble pronouncing the name: Name’s Sir To-BEE-as…To-bee-AS…
Rollins: Sir Tobias Moore? (to Benson) From PicFlix, he just moved to New York ahead of Brexit.
Officer: The girl was crying so hard in the car I thought I might have to take her to the hospital.
Benson and Rollins look over to the interview room.

In the interview room with Benson and Rollins
Pilar Reyes: He said he’s ??? at home and it was just us. He said he wanted to tape me…(crying) …so stupid. I should have just left.
Benson: That’s not stupid, Pilar. He’s a very powerful man.
Pilar: He poured me a few drinks, he said that I needed to…to relax and then he made me take my blouse off.
Rollins: Made you.
Pilar: He yell at me. (Rollins nods) So I do what he said.

Clip 2
Fin and Rollins are at the AirBNB of Pilar Reyes

Fin, to Pilar, who is packing: Packing. Going somewhere?
Pilar: My agent said if I don’t want trouble I should get out of town. I already overstayed my visa.
Rollins: You’re an NYPD material witness. You don’t have to worry about any of that.
Fin, looking around, seeing a large gift basket: Nice basket.
Pilar: It got here right before you did.
Fin, reading the card: “Lovely to meet you. Hope we get to work together soon. All the best, Sir Toby.” He left his number. Did you call him?
Pilar: NO! He makes me sick.
Rollins: Pilar, this means that he’s worried. Okay, you could call him, you could…you could arrange a meeting. Listen, we would have eyes on you the entire time.
Pilar: I don’t wanna see him again!
Fin: Yes you do.
