Law & Order SVU “Justice Denied’ Recap & Review

Law & Order SVU seemed to be on hiatus for so long I was worried that viewers would forget about it. “Justice Denied” was an episode that was clearly worth the wait. It begins with a flashback taken from the episode “Quarry” that first aired in January 2005 (from a 2004 case). While this dialog was taken from “Quarry,” I do not believe that “Justice Denied” is an actual revisiting of the primary case in “Quarry”. I am sure there are nitpickers out there who can help confirm or refute this.

It seems the entire season so far has been building to this episode. This was a well crafted story where Olivia Benson’s work, her friendship with Bayard Ellis, and her romantic relationship with EADA David Haden would collide in spectacular fashion. Sadly, it’s Benson who winds up losing at the end. Her relationship with Haden goes by the wayside as he isn’t willing to sacrifice his new promotion. She understands, but my suspicious nature wonders if David wasn’t just using her – and her access to controversial cases - just to find a way to advance his own career. It seemed all too easy for him to turn on his professional persona when needed. It was either that, or the fact that Harry Connick Jr. comes across cold even in scenes where he should be personable. (I actually feel bad for saying anything negative about Harry’s acting because I really enjoy his singing and music.) Andre Braugher is perfect as Bayard Elllis, a lawyer driven to defend people who have been wronged. At the same time, he maintains a good working friendship with Benson, despite her being in a job with which Ellis, or other lawyers like him,  can sometimes be at odds.

“Justice Denied” was an exceptional episode where Mariska showed the breadth of her acting ability. One of the biggest improvements with SVU this season has been the writing; each story seems completely believable and the dialog seems very true to the characters. Fans should feel proud of the work that the entire SVU production team is doing this season.

Back in 2004, Omar Pena is in SVU interrogation with Detective Olivia Benson, and he is breathing heavily. Afterwards, Captain Don Cragen asks if she got her confession, and Benson nods, saying he held out for 9 hours. He hands her an envelope and says the desk sergeant asked him to bring this up, and then asks her if she wants any coffee. She says yes, then adds two eggs over easy, hash browns, and toast. Cragen turns and looks back at her, but she smiles and says coffee is fine.

In the present day at Green Haven Correctional Facility, the warden arrives at Omar Pena’s cell, and the guard tells Pena is it judgment day. The other inmates clap for Pena as he walks out but the man tells Pena not to get his hopes up.

In the courtroom, the judge confirms that Pena wants to represent himself and he has a motion to vacate his conviction based on new evidence, and asks what new evidence. Pena says the evidence is pending a retesting of the DNA at the crime scene. The prosecutor says there was no DNA at the crime scene, and Pena says none based on the technology of the time but new techniques can obtain DNA from much smaller amounts of trace evidence. The prosecutor tersely argues that Pena wants then to overturn a conviction based on evidence Pena does not have. Pena states that the state has the means at their disposal to prove that he is not the man who committed this horrible crime. The judge asks if he means the crime he confessed to – the rape and torture of Ariel Baskins, whom he tied up, stabbed, and tried to blind her with ammonia. Pena says he has maintained for 8 years that confession was elicited under extreme duress. He says he recanted, but the judge interrupts and says it was after he pleaded guilty and the victim ID’d him. She rules that he failed to make the standard to overturn his conviction and denies the motion.

Outside a bar – it’s fleet week – a woman stumbles out with a Navy officer and tells her female friend they are going dancing but her friend Gina decides to pass. When Gina gets to her apartment she is immediately attacked as she tries to open the door. Later. she is bound to her bed, gagged, and bleeding, and she reaches for the phone and pulls it toward her.

Later, Benson arrives at the scene and is on the phone with EADA David Haden, and she is apologizing for sneaking out on him, saying she would have woken him but then probably would not have left. She enters the apartment and Detective Nick Amaro tells her the victim is Gina Logan, and explains the unis responded to her 911 call and found her tied to the bed. Her attacker forced her inside and was wearing a sailor’s uniform. EMS took her to Mercy and is still in serious condition Benson notices a bottle of ammonia cleaner on the floor and Amaro says the attacker poured ammonia in her eyes and tried to blind her. Benson asked if she was gagged, and when Amaro confirms that, Benson asks if he cut her below the chest, and Amaro says three slashes. Benson knows the attacker – adding they put him away for life 8 years ago, but thinks this is him.

Back at SVU, Benson asks Rollins if she is sure, and Rollins explains that she spoke to the warden herself; Pena was in his cell as of 10 minutes ago. Benson insists this is Pena’s MO, mentioning the Navy uniform, fleet week, torture, the ammonia. Benson says if Rollins told her someone took his place in prison, she would believe it. Rollins says it is possible. Pena had a hearing in New York a week ago to get his conviction overturned and he lost but maybe he staged a flip. Cragen approaches and tells them to back up, asking if they are talking about last night’s attack, and asks how is the victim. Amaro says that Gina Logan has chemical burns to the eyes and she has slash wounds, the attacker did a number on her. There are no leads and CSU is still checking for prints and running the rape kit. Cragen asks if Benson thinks he knows this guy, and Benson explains that they put Omar Pena away in 2004 and he confessed and the victim, Ariel Baskins, ID’d him. Pena spent the last 8 years recanting. Rollins asks if he had an accomplice and Fin says he remembers this case, the victim was alone with him for 10 hours in hell and was gagged with her own scarf and bound in rope and the guy never said a word and there was no partner. Cragen asks if Pena switched with a doppelganger when he was being transferred for the hearing, and Benson thinks maybe he got somebody on the outside to mimic his MO. Amaro wonders if a copycat would through suspicion on his conviction. Cragen tells Benson and Amaro to head up to Green Haven and talk to whoever is in his cell and tells Fin and Rollins to go to the hospital and see if the doctors will let them interview Gina

At Mercy Hospital, Rollins speaks with Gina and asks her if she saw the man before who attacked her. Gina, struggling to talk, says no, and tells Rollins the man was Hispanic in a white Navy uniform. He never spoke. The nurse enters the room and tells Rollins the doctor told Rollins to come back tomorrow. Meanwhile, Fin speaks with Gina’s friend Courtney and asks where was the bar the two girls were hanging out. She explains it was a dive they go to when the ships are in. When Rollins approaches and asks if any Hispanic guys talk to them, Courtney says it was fleet week, it was like the UN in there. She last saw Gina outside the bar around midnight. She hooked up with an officer and they were headed to a club and Gina felt like the third wheel so she walked home and Gina was drunk. Courtney feels she should have never left her alone. Fin says the rope guy at CSU has something, and Rollins seems surprised that that they have a rope guy. Fin shrugs, saying “Yeah. Guess I’ve been on this job too long.”

At the CSU lab, the rope guy is more interested in the knot, they guy used a clove hitch on the wrist and a bowline to tie her to the bed. This is something taught in Navy training. He demonstrates how he wrapped the working end around and finishes on the inside, and says whoever tied these knots finished on the outside, meaning the attacker is left handed.

Law & Order SVU “Hunting Ground” Recap & Review

All Photos by NBCUniversal

Warren Leight et al. pulled out another thriller of an episode in “Hunting Ground.” It was a “ripped from the headlines” story reminiscent of the real life Long Island serial killings. The episode opened with a little romance between Benson and EADA Haden. The glow of the weekend ends quickly with the case of a missing girl which evolves rapidly into something much bigger. Benson and Haden’s relationship gets tested when Benson tries to enlist Haden’s support to identify the girl’s abductor by going after a local newspaper and their advertisers. Sadly, it takes a lot more bodies for Haden to see the light. But, did Haden have the press conference to call out the escort services and newspapers out of outrage over the number of victims and the way the newspapers were facilitating prostitution, or did he do it for political motives as it was a high profile case? I would like to think that Benson had something to do with his change of heart, but something in the back of my mind makes me worry that he is not what he seems. (I guess I have trust issues.)

Television has seen its share of serial killer stories over the years, to the point that I think it’s overdone. Still, this episode gave more than a creepy killer, bodies, and detectives working the case;  we got to see a little more about how their personal lives can be affected by working these horrific cases.

Was it right for the police and Amaro to leave Benson alone with the victim while they searched the surrounding area for the killer? How did the killer get back into the building without all those police nearby,  searching the immediate area? Had they simply left someone stationed at or inside the door while Benson stayed with the victim, she would have likely not been placed in harm’s way.

Here is the recap:

Teleplay by: David Matthews & John P. Roche
Story by; John P. Roche & Warren Leight

Benson and Haden leave a movie theatre and when Haden puts his arm around her, she asks what he is doing. He tells her not to worry, nobody they work with could sit through two hours of black and white with no talking. Benson says she is a little confused by the rules. Haden replies that officially, if this works, they just need to disclose their involvement. Benson asks if “disclose” means to send out a memo. He says yes, one to her boss and one to his. Benson comments she doesn’t know if she is ready for that, and Haden tells her to take some time and back off to take some of the pressure off. She thinks that’s good. He says there is a great bistro down the street and asks if she want to get something to eat, but she counters with an invite to her place for some takeout. He says he likes it...a lot.

As they walk off, a man with his dog standing nearby pulls a newspaper out of a nearby vending box. Later, in his car, he is looking at ads and is on the phone, telling the person on the other end there will be no credit cards, his wife looks at the statements, and he will give cash up front. He tells them to have her wait for him at 14th and 7th, adding “Starbucks, 9PM.”

Elsewhere, a young woman, Haley, who is holding a baby, is on the phone and says “9 PM” and that she can do it. She tells the caller to let her get dressed.    When she hangs up the phone her mother walks in and is surprised she is going out, but Haley says she can’t turn down catering stuff, they will start calling other people. Her mother asks who has dinner this late? Haley says rich people, and her mother says that is good, maybe she will meet someone.

Later, at dinner with the man we saw earlier – Haley calls him Brewster – she seems perplexed that he wanted to take her to dinner, saying most men want the experience in bed. He says that the chase is half the fun, and encourages her to get a steak as a woman needs meat on her bones to survive these winters, She says she likes to stay inside, but he likes to be out, walking the beach. The waiter asks “Brewster” if he is done, and he instructs him to wrap up his leftovers for his dog.

Later, he opens the car door and his dog Orion is in there and she hesitates. He tells her that the dog does not bite but Haley says she usually does not get in cars. He asks if she is scared but she asks if the dog has been in there the whole time. He says the dog likes it. She gets in.

Back at Benson’s apartment Benson and Haden are looking over carry out menus and Benson asks if he sees anything he likes. He says yes, and moves in to kiss her. She pauses and asks if that is what he meant by taking is slow and taking the pressure off. He asks her what is wrong and she says nothing. He tells her he understands that this is really hard for her, but whatever it is, he can handle it. He’s not going anywhere, okay? She says okay. He replies, “so come here” and she smiles and kisses him.

Later, “Brewster” is driving in his car with the dog in the front seat, and Haley is in the back seat behind a wire screen, and she tells him please, she will do anything, he doesn’t have to pay her, and she doesn’t want to die. He comments that is up to her, isn’t it? She sobs.

The next morning, Benson and Haden are in bed together, asleep, and they are awakened by a phone call from Cragen. She shuts off the phone and lays back down. He says he guesses the weekend has to end sometime.

Law & Order SVU “Father’s Shadow” Recap & Review

Law & Order SVU “Father’s Shadow” was an excellent episode that was firing on all cylinders -  great acting and a solid story written exceptionally well. It also opened different than the traditional episodes by starting 5 days ahead of the lead story. While this is a technique that is overused in other television shows, I am hard pressed to think of an episode in the entire Law & Order universe that has started this way. It helped to set the tone for this very dramatic and unsettling episode.

The case first began as a story about the stereotypical casting couch, but soon twisted into a hostage situation. Interspersed within the story was a glimpse into the progression of Benson’s relationship with EADA Haden. The writers are doing a fine job in giving Benson’s personal life a little exposure without it feeling forced. A question, though: Benson was reluctant to go to dinner at a bistro with Haden - citing it as a possible conflict of interest – but didn’t she have dinner alone with him in the previous episode? Did the conflict have to do with the fact that his apartment was close by and that there was a presumption that this is where he planned the evening to end? Based on what we know of upcoming episodes, Benson clearly doesn’t hold on to the conflict of interest excuse for long.

It was obvious that Amaro’s tactic of saying he heard someone call for help in the casting office was not going to fly. I was surprised that he even tried it. But at least it gave an excuse to bring in Michael Cutter, even if it was for short scenes.

“Father’s Shadow” is one of the best episodes of the season, and a wonderful feature for Mariska. She really delivered the drama.

Here is the recap:

Cast
Mariska Hargitay – Detective Olivia Benson
Ice-T – Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola
Richard Belzer – Sergeant John Munch
Dann Florek – Captain Don Cragen
Kelli Giddish - Detective Amanda Rollins
Danny Pino - Detective Nick Amaro

Guest stars:
Linus Roache - Bureau Chief Michael Cutter
Harry Connick, Jr. - Executive A.D.A. David Haden
Miranda Lambert - Lacey Ford
Michael McKean – Burt Sandow
Robert Klein – Dwight Stannich
Cameron Monaghan- Eddie Sandow
Kelly Karbacz - Jess
Emma Rayne Lyle - Lily Whitley
David Warshofsky – Chief Duggan
Chris Butler – Sergeant Mullin
Michael Mastro – Judge Serani
Ilene Kristen – Eddie’s mother
Karen Tsen Lee – Medical Examiner
Charlotte Graham – Mallory Jenner
Robin DeJesus – Jose Silva
Katie Flahive – Alicia Sandow

Detectives Benson and Amaro, along with Captain Cragen, arrive at a scene where police and a hostage negotiating team are present. Chief Duggan introduces Sergeant Mullin from HNT who tells Benson the gunman asked for her.

Five days earlier, Benson is giving a lecture, speaking about drug facilitated sexual assault, and she sees EADA David Haden arrive.

Elsewhere, Jess introduces Mallory Jenner to Mr. Sandow, announcing it is his 5:00 audition. He laughs when Mallory shakes his hand, and then explains she is competing for a leading role in a Broadway musical and the audience needs to see her passion. She then gives him a huge hug, all while being recorded on video by Eddie.

Back at the lecture, Benson tells the audience that with awareness comes action, and then leaves the stage to much applause.  Haden walks up to greet her, saying it was a terrific speech, adding that it was engaging and funny, considering the topic. Benson says she would rather be locked in a box with a perp. As the moderator begins to announce Haden, Benson wisecracks to him that they will let anyone speak here. He asks if she is staying, adding it is about international sex trafficking, and he cut the speech down to three hours.

Back at the audition, Mallory Jenner says this would be her dream come true. Sandow tells her to go again, and to show him she will do whatever it takes to get this part. He looks at this watch and then tells Jess that they are running late and to go home to Lily, and she leaves. Mallory continues with the audition, and then Sandow tells Eddie he will try a couple without the camera, so Eddie exits the room. Sandow reaches for a large crystal trophy and hands it to Mallory, saying it is his Documentas award which he won in 1992 for a documentary, “Hard Labor”. He takes the glass of champagne out of her hand and tells her to seduce the audience and to let them know she wants this. As he says “action” things start to look fuzzy.

After the lecture, Benson and Haden are leaving together, Haden commenting “Sri Lanka, in a heartbeat.” Benson says she would like to visit Paris someday. He seems surprised that she hasn’t already, adding that is a crime. She says it is something to look forward to. He goes on to say he lives a couple blocks uptown and there is a bistro and he is a regular, usually eating by himself. She asks if he is one of those guys. As they walk out the door, Haden comments about a Stanley Elkin quote, “The peculiar dignity of men seen eating alone...” and then proceeds to ask her to dinner. She smiles and says she is actually still on duty, adding she is a cop and he is the DA, asking isn't that a conflict of interest waiting to happen? He says she is right, he gets it. As he walks off, he tells her not to wait too long to see Paris.

Law & Order SVU “Official Story” Recap & Review

Law & Order SVU “Official Story’ had a lot packed into this episode, including an assault on the CEO of a big company, the Occupy Wall Street protest, an old rape case that happened in Iraq, a murder of a witness, an attempted murder of the father of the rape victim, another attack on the initial rape victim, a threat to Amaro’s family, a new EADA and a love interest for Benson. Whew! Despite having so much going on, I am actually having a hard time writing the review for it.

First and foremost, I did like the episode and there were many elements that I enjoyed. The writing team has been doing a great job this season of coming up with very interesting cases, and they are telling the stories very well. The cast is all performing well (Munch is MIA again, though) and things seem to be clicking. I think my hang-ups with this episode, and why I am struggling, revolve around two issues:

1. The investigation of Rand’s company’s involvement in the cover up of a years old rape in Iraq had no business being handled by SVU. Forget Amaro’s argument (or excuse) that it could speak to O’Keefe’s motive - I don’t think that was a valid reason for SVU to be involved any further. O'Keefe already gave them the motive and it should be up to his defense to determine whether that motive mitigates the crime he committed. As the case progressed, it became even more clear that SVU was in way over their heads. Later on, after Benson’s apartment is ransacked, a witness killed, a girl attacked and her father stabbed, THEN Cragen makes the observation that they are dealing with a private army. Well, no kidding – that should have been glaringly obvious the minute that the company name “Battle Tested Security” was mentioned and its CEO attacked. SVU sticking their noses in a case that was far beyond their abilities contributed to a witness being killed and the girl and her father being attacked. If SVU would have used their brains, the witness would have never been left in his hotel room without a guard outside. (Update: Amaro did comment that the uni (uniformed officer) said no one came to the room after he left, so possibly someone was watching the room. If so, how did the liquor get in... maybe the officer wasn't stationed right at the door?)   SVU’s sloppy handling of the case led to far too much collateral damage.  This case may have fit much better as a Law & Order or better yet a Criminal Intent episode,   or, if either of those series still existed. this story could have made a for a nice SVU crossover/double episode.

2. I adore Harry Connick Jr.'s music and I own many of his recordings gong years back. But it pains me to say that his acting was awful. His delivery was flat and lifeless in every single scene. Yes, I am thrilled that Benson may have someone who – at least at this point in time – makes her happy, and Harry is certainly easy on the eyes. But his acting was no better than someone reading lines. I literally cringed with every one of his scenes.

I’m also not a big fan of focusing on the characters’ personal lives. While I don’t mind this episode’s focus on Mariska/Benson – after her years with SVU she deserves it - I am already a little tired of the focus on Amaro’s family.

Here is the recap:
Cast:
Mariska Hargitay – Detective Olivia Benson
Ice-T – Detective Odafin “Fin” Tutuola
Richard Belzer – Sergeant John Munch
Dann Florek – Captain Don Cragen
Kelli Giddish - Detective Amanda Rollins
Danny Pino - Detective Nick Amaro

Guest stars:
Harry Connick, Jr. - EADA David Haden
John Doman - William Rand
Laura Benanti - Maria Grazie
Holt McCallany - Donald O’Keefe
Annie Meisels: Dr. Rausch
Lola Glaudini – Virginia Pell
Lisa Masters – Tina Heller
Jacob Wallach - Kenny Taylor (the protester)
Billy Brown – Joe Marshall
Craig Walker – George Coleman
Megan Ketch – Cory Green
Caris Vujcec - Counselor Bree Price
Alison Fernandez – Zara Amaro

At an Occupy Wall Street protest, William Rand steps out of his limo and a protester asks him how he sleeps at night. Rand says he is serving his country and sleeps just fine. Later, on a news program, Rand, who is CEO of Battle Tested Security - the largest private military contractor in the world – talks about how well business is going. Meanwhile, Detective Nick Amaro comes home with his daughter Zara and surprises her when she sees her mother is home. Amaro welcomes his wife Maria home and kisses her.

Later, Rand exits the TV studio and is in his limo and when the driver asks if it has been a long day, Rand says they are all long. Rand drinks some bottled water but he looks a little ill. He notices the driver is not going the right way and he asks why they are going uptown and not the heliport. The driver tells him to relax, there is tunnel traffic. Rand continues to look ill.

The next day, a boy on a school outing, at a memorial for soldiers and sailors, points out a man laying on the ground. The teacher sees a man laying on the ground with his pants down and the words “Payback is a bitch” written on his leg. His shirt is open and he is gagged. It is William Rand. She calls 911.

Later, in the hospital, Rand tells Benson and Amaro he does not know what happened. Benson says they think he was drugged. The last thing he remembers is being in the limo with the driver and he went the wrong way. He was not one of his regulars, he was sent by the TV studio. Amaro asks for the name of his contact and Rand says Jenny can get that for him. Virginia Pell, Rand’s general counsel, introduces himself and says she is emailing for the information now. Rand says he did have some bottled water in the limo. When Benson explains that the tox screen will show if he was given any sedative, Rand asks don’t they need his permission to look at those records? Amaro says they are there to help him. He asks Beth to see where the nurse is and she leave to find her. He asks Benson if they think she was raped, and she reminds him that he was found drugged and beaten with his clothes ripped off. Rand gets upset and says he wasn’t raped, he was attacked by the enemy because of the work he does. Pell says Rand has been through a lot, and tells the detectives that Rand needs to rest now.

As they leave, Pell says she appreciates their concern but they will take it from there, they have their own team of investigators. Benson explains SVU does not subcontract their investigations. Pell asks if they understand the delicacy of the situation and they need to control the publicity. Benson says all of their cases are sensitive and Amaro adds that they need their cooperation, unless they want them to start issuing subpoenas. Pell agrees and says she will be in touch, and she walks off.

Harry Connick Jr. To Guest Star in NBC’s Law & Order SVU (NBC Press Release)

NBC Press Release January 6, 2012
EMMY AND GRAMMY AWARD-WINNING HARRY CONNICK JR. TO GUEST-STAR IN NBC’S ‘LAW & ORDER: SPECIAL VICTIMS UNIT’

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. -- January 6, 2012 -- Three-time Grammy Award winner, two-time Emmy Award winner and Tony Award nominee Harry Connick Jr. will have a multi-episode, guest-starring turn on the Wolf Films/NBC drama “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit” (Wednesdays, 10-11 p.m. ET).

Connick will guest-star as Executive ADA David Haden, a dedicated, straight-shooting prosecutor who is assigned a case with Detective Benson (Mariska Hargitay). Although Benson is at first wary of Haden, they are both surprised to find they work well together. As the case develops, so does their relationship. Connick’s first episode will air January 18.

“This is a home run on so many levels,” said Hargitay. “The show is very fortunate to have Harry's extraordinary talent, and I'm lucky because I get to work with my friend. I think Olivia couldn't have asked for a better companion to take her through a new stage in her life and career.”

A star in music, theater, film and television, Connick recently won his second Emmy for musical direction of his live concert television special, “Harry Connick Jr. in Concert on Broadway.” He currently is starring on Broadway in the musical “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever” about which USA Today said: “Harry Connick Jr. has never sung or acted more powerfully.” The musical is directed by Tony Award-winner Michael Mayer, who also is the director of NBC’s upcoming Broadway-themed drama “Smash.”

This year Connick starred in the hit film “Dolphin Tale” which debuted at #1 at the box office with Ashley Judd, Morgan Freeman and Kris Kristofferson. He also added author to his credentials with “The Happy Elf,” his beloved song and children’s Christmas stage musical turned into a keepsake children’s book with an accompanying instrumental jazz CD released by Marsalis Music. On television, Connick is best remembered as Dr. Leo Markus on NBC’s “Will and Grace.”

A proud New Orleans native, Connick and longtime friend Branford Marsalis opened the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music in The Musicians’ Village in the Ninth Ward of New Orleans last summer, in conjunction with Habitat for Humanity. From music to dance, theater to film, the goal of the Center is to harness the exceptional talents of the residents and students of the surrounding Musicians’ Village in a collective effort that will provide an invaluable resource to New Orleans.

“Law & Order: SVU” is a Wolf Films production in association with Universal Television. Dick Wolf, Warren Leight and Peter Jankowski are executive producers.
