Law & Order Criminal Intent Gets New Captain: Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio

Michael Ausiello of Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio will play the new captain on Law & Order Criminal Intent. She will replace Eric Bogosian, who has played Captain Danny Ross. The name of her character is not yet available.

As fans that follow the show already know, show stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Kathryn Erbe, and Eric are all exiting the show in the season premiere 2 part episode for the new season, which will begin in March 2009, one of their characters being killed in the process.

Mastrantonio has appeared in several films, such as “The Abyss,” “The Color of Money'” and “Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.” She also had a recurring role in CBS’ "Without A Trace.”

I know it will be hard for D'Onofrio, Erbe, and Bogosian fans to be exited for this change. I wish Elzabeth the best in this new role.

Wow, well I think it is more than likely to be Ross that gets killed-we know that Vincent sid he would return at some point in the future for special appearances, cannot see his character wanting to do that of his best friend were to be killed plus the man has had enough heartbreak in his life too-that would be so cruel to kill her too. Interesting choice, she is a good actress, hope she does well. Thanks for sharing:)

I don't think anyone is going to be watching the show anymore anyway. In fact, I am actively boycotting any USA network programming.

I agree that Ross will most likely be killed off. Goren really has gone through a lot; I remember one episode a few seasons back when one member of his supporting cast went crazy and butchered every other minor recurring character.

And, yikes, I guess I'll be the only commenter still watching Criminal Intent. I liked Vincent D'Onofrio and I really, really liked Kathryn Erbe. I hope they left of their own free will, or else there's some way that they can remain on somewhere. I like Jeff Goldblum, but CI has lost its entire original cast at once, which never happened even on the original series.

Some viewers will stick with the show but the D'Onofrio fans were the ones who helped keep the ratings up. Hopefully there are enough Goldblum fans to make up for all the D'Onofrio/Erbe fans that won't watch.

Thanks for the info!

D'Onofrio and Erbe was on fire the first five seasons, since season 7 D'Onofrio looks like he's sleepwalking. I'll miss them both but hope the series will be re-invigorated by the new blood. Stopped watching original Law and Order after Orbach died but just finished watching season 19 and it was great. It will be exciting to see how it turns out.

I'm sure I'll watch to see for myself how this all works out, but I'm not excited with the changes. While the Mothership has survived with a ton of changes, both SVU and CI depend more on their lead characters to drive the shows. And as many times as I've rolled my eyes over the years at the wealth of knowledge Goren has, a CI without him AND Eames doesn't seem right. Time will tell....

Well, I have no ill feelings for any of the new actors walking into the disaster that the powers that be has turned this show into.

But I won't be watching. I have decided to skip the season 9 premiere as well. I don't want to see any of the departing die and I refuse to acknowledge that this season is part of the LOCI saga. In fact, I've decided Season 7 was the last 'official' LOCI season with Ladies Man as an epilogue. The rest of season 8 was a disaster and the only reason people continued watching was because of Goren and Eames. Now that they are gone, there is no reason to tune in.

All good things must come to an end and sadly, this show is ending one or two seasons too late.

I wish people would stop complaining about their favorite characters and actors leaving. The season has not even premiered yet, give it a freaking chance. Jeff Goldblum is an incredible actor (and more fun to watch than D'Onofrio, in my opinion). I have never watched anything that Saffron Burrows has played in. I am interested in how they and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio will work together this season. Have faith in the show and the writers and give the season a decent chance.

God I hope it is Ross, come on think about this, Eames lost her husband, and when her husband partner died, she helped Mrs. Quinn dealing the lost and they were friends before that. but if Eames die, that would be alot to her family, and that friend. altho I frogotten the name all ready. But, If Ross dies... I hope it's another prank, saying one of the nonmember of the major case dies, eg, the high cheif. won't be the first time.
