Here is the discussion topic for Law & Order “A Perfect Family” which aired on Thursday, April 3, 2025. Please feel free to add any feedback you have about this episode in the comments!
Great episode! It was nice to see them utilize a new side character in the psychiatrist. But man, I'm so done with Price after this episode. They write him as a complete wuss. First, he backs down from the father in the conference room and then he fails to nail the SOB when he had the chance. Ben Stone, Jack McCoy, or Mike Cutter would have never! And why didn't they call the doctor as the impeachment witness? She witnessed him rip up the prescription. One other nitpick: if Shaw was still out sick, why was the Lieutenant working the case with Riely and not Detective Violet Yee especially after they showed her out in the field a few episodes ago?
To be perfectly blunt, this case was a load of crap. They had the girl's killer, the mom formulated a plan to follow and murder her own daughter in cold blood with no one the wiser. She knew to lie to the police and direct suspicion to another suspect (the creepy coach), and immediately lawyered up when finally caught. I also didn't really see any remorse when she testified. The husband was a huge jerk and should have paid attention to his wife, but it seemed to me like they were trying to prosecute him for a law that didn't exist.
I have mixed feelings about this episode. I thought it was very interesting until Maroun started feeling sorry for the woman who murdered her daughter, and then Price lost his backbone. I think the case against the dad was weak even if the kid testified. It should have never gone to trial that way. Price has always been the weak link in this series and he needs to be replaced with someone with a Jack McCoy-style killer instinct. By the way, what's going on with Mehcad Brooks that he's been absent. Did I miss something? They seem to explain Shaw's absence with an illness I think but usually they only do that if the actor is not available.
@Shane - I've had it with Price. And to some extent, Maroun too. I long for the days of prosecutors who have the drive like McCoy and even for the "hang 'em high" Abbie Carmichael attitude. It's time for a change on the legal side of the series, and if I had to chose one to go it would be Price. I wouldn't be upset if they started over with both of them, though. For this case, they were far too sympathetic to the mother and didn't have a solid enough case against the father. They wasted that trial.
The writers really did a bad job on this. New York has a law called First Degree Endangering the Welfare. A husband who actively prevents his wife from receiving necessary mental health care can be charged with a Class E felony. This means a death caused as the result of that action becomes Felony Murder. Could Dick Wolf please hire writers who know how to do research?
Thank you! I totally think the mother played them and was only using that psychosis to try and get away scot free. She didn't even apologize for killing Emily, that's what bothers me the most.
