I didn't care too much for the other detective and I agree it was a foregone conclusion he'd make trouble for them. I do like the pairing for Cosgrove and Shaw and I think they make for a strong opening. I could do without Cosgrove's daughter because as @Valens said, she will probably be in peril sometime later.
The legal side was not very strong but I am happy to have at least one of the Law & Orders have decent legal story lines. SVU and OC are falling flat in that aspect so I'll take what I can get!
Am I the only one who is bothered by the way the cops are arresting suspects, and NOT reciting the Miranda Rights speech like they used to? This applies to SVU as well as this show. Big mistake. Huge.
@ChiTownGal - The only thing I can think of is that the writers think we all know it by heart now and they don't want to waste dialog on it. But you're right, we do need to see/hear them reading them!
Did they seriously name a character (and a corrupt one at that) "Jerry Ryan"? As in the actress who's been on several episodes of these shows, and even had a character based on her (see Sex Club)? Yes I know she spells it differently, but come on.
A serial killer/actor combination is an interesting angle, but they did nothing with it. What's this guy's story? Did he have some traumatic event in his past that one of the roles brought forth? Is he like the guy in Vacancy, so method and trying to get into character that he actually does the deeds (they did say he worked on a Jack the Ripper movie)? Also, he IS an actor. Why was he not on the stand acting the part of an innocent man?
