Here is the discussion topic for Law & Order SVU “Impropriety” which aired on Thursday, April 30, 2026 at 9PM ET on NBC. Please feel free to add any feedback you have about this episode in the comments!
This season of SVU has been much better after two bad seasons under the previous show-runner. However, there’s too much Benson.
I notice the synopsis for next weeks episode says Fin will be in charge (I guess given Benson’s suspension) but then the promo has Benson front and center. Could we not give Mariska one episode off? I miss when SVU was actually an ensemble show.
We all love Benson but they don’t realize that they shove her down our throats and make her character so overbearing that it comes across patronizing, though unintentional. It’s like she’s always right and is the only one who can say certain things. It’s comes across forced at times.
I also am confused about what’s next. We have two captains and two sergeants and not enough actual detectives, which wouldn’t happen in real life without actual people to supervise.
Then you have the optics of the show not being able to afford Ice-T and Kelli Giddish at the same time and several episodes only have certain cast members but always Benson.
Given that there are so many supervisors, I think it would be interesting to have some episodes with all cast members and some where Fin, Rollins, Curry and Benson can rotate supervising an investigation with a smaller crew of cast and maybe have Benson deal with the politics like Cragen did, if necessary and then on certain investigations she can be the lead supervisor.
I’m also tried of Benson constantly being in the field, it takes away from the new detectives. Captains cannot lead units/precincts and also do detective work all the time too.
Thats why Tynan is not wrong, Benson has an issue delegating and understanding her role. While she is protective of her staff and they can learn a lot from her, she doesn’t realize if Cragen did what she’s doing to her staff to her, she would not have never grown to be where she is today.
Lastly for Fin to be second in command, we rarely see him with supervisor functions because it’s all Benson. I think that would be interesting to see him actually take the lead and make decisions and maybe deal with the politics for a change without Benson to see what his approach would be. The same with Rollins.
To keep the show fresh we want to see the characters and dynamics change. Things are not always black and white so while Benson will win the war with Tynan and Tynan does have her own agenda, it doesn’t mean she’s wrong about Benson’s inability to delegate. However, the show will just have Benson win the war because Benson is never wrong instead of actually making her character grow and change.

I digress. Thanks for reading.
