I'm going to need a couple of days to digest this... But some quick thoughts:

I do wonder if this was the original idea back 1999-2000 when we had three shows and they were planning a crossover. The bombing of the hotel? Yeah, would not make it palatable in the immediate aftermath of the September 11th attacks and the Global War on Terror in the years subsequent.

What struck me was the sheer amount of violence in this special (note: I don't watched OC and only saw the first season of SVU and the crossover eps that involved the mothership or have Jack in them so I have no idea if this is normal).

I did like Shaw though. He had a nice introduction. Wasn't too antagonistic, tried to be deferential. Picked up quick. I hope the writers do right by him.

I also thought the scope of the crime was WAY too big for the show. Though I did remark to my friend, "Jack is going to indict Putin as coconspirator, ain't he?"

And lastly, this special swung from moments of outright impressive moments in how the writing was to me wanting to throw my remote at my monitor and scream. Was I watching Law & Order or was I watching Miami Vice?

Really looking forward to your analysis, I'm sure I'll have other thoughts after. I just... need time to digest what I watched.

I really liked it. Very compelling. Great to see the squads work together, thought we didn't see much of some people. Lots of good acting. I thought the girl who played Nicole was VERY good. I really liked Vincent. I don't want to say anything spoilery, but I will say I don't know why the Feds didn't take the case after the bombing. Surely terrorism of that level would be federally charged, regardless of the state it happened in.

This is a HUGE improvement over last season so far, for all the shows.

I like the chemistry between Cosgrove and Shaw. It feels a lot more natural and less adversarial than Cosgrove and Bernard.

The case itself was very interesting and well written. I liked how Benson took charge many times although I found myself wondering why she was the one to take charge in some of these situations. Lots of action which is always welcome on these shows in my opinion.

The only downside - and it's a minor one but a thing that bugs me a lot with SVU - the story loses a lot of momentum when they have these long scenes where a victim spends time telling Benson every detail of her situation. Yeah I know this is what SVU is all about but my eye glaze over every time a victim goes on and on and on...

Perfect start to the season and I hope things continue with the same level!

What did you think of the Crossover Event?

I thought they did a great job in actually crossing over the shows and the cast members. It wasn't like past crossovers where the cast had incidental appearances in the other episodes. I liked the story overall - there were a few slow spots but nothing that dragged down the pace. Cosgrove and Shaw are looking to be a nice matchup and that will be a big plus for Law & Order going forward. They're off to a fantastic start!

So I noticed in the first scene on SVU they're trying to figure out the teenager's name and by the end of scene Benson calls her Nicole but the girl never said her name

To Valens Hawke, yes, OC has been known to be very violent.

It probably would have been better to have just made this a general L&O movie event (although TV movies aren't really a thing anymore aside from Lifetime, Hallmark, and Syfy), because splitting up the thirds between the shows doesn't really work. Part 1 is OC, yet none of their cast enter until the episode is halfway over! It makes sense for L&O to have the trial, sure, but why is this also where significant things happen to the SVU characters (Carisi is not even in Part 2)? At the very least, I hope the DVD sets (are they ever going to jump to Blu ray?) for each show contain all of the episodes.

No explanation for Bernard's exit? They might be waiting for an L&O proper episode to do that. And isn't Sirenko's first name Mark? Why did the picture on the board say Maxim?
