Kelli Giddish Announces Her Final Season With SVU

Kelli Giddish made the following announcement on Instagram: Kelli Giddish Announces Her Final Season With SVU - Instagram.

“I wanted to address the chatter I’ve seen online and let everyone know that this will, indeed, be my last season on ‘Law & Order: SVU.’ Playing Rollins has been one of the greatest joys and privileges of my life. I’ve been so fortunate to be a part of the ‘Law & Order’ family for the last 12 years. There is simply no other character on TV like Rollins. She’s grown and changed, and I have as well. I started on this show when I was in my late 20s and I’m grateful I got to spend so many of my adult years with Rollins in my life.

I want to thank Dick Wolf, Mariska Hargitay, Warren Leight, Peter Jankowski, NBC, Universal Television, all of my co-stars, every single member on the crew and all the writers here for our incredible work together these last 12 years. I’m so excited to take all the things I have learned in my time on ‘SVU’ and put them toward everything that’s next to come…. #SVU”

Hmm...I have to be honest, I wasn't much of a fan of her character at the beginning of her tenure on the show. But, over the years I began to grow fond of her. I really did enjoy the interaction between her and the rest of the team including Carisi. She will be missed. And I wish her well and her future endeavors. I am really wondering why she's leaving now though. Why do you think that is Chris?

It is sad that she is leaving
She was an Interesting Character, but she had questionable episodes with her sister and the Episode, Gambler's Fallacy but she was a good character
What Episode do you think she will Leave?

This was a weird one for me because once upon a time I would have been VERY upset at the news. But Rollins is a character that has been written into a corner. I don't think there was much left to discuss abt her.

At one pt I was saying she had become one-dimensional w Rollisi being the only thing abt her. But even in that she has had a passive role (once they were official). Weird analogy but I think of the Rollisi rel as one between a toddler and a sippy cup- one of those spoutless, spill-proof, leak- proof cups. It has been so well designed that the characteristics of the toddler and how they interact w the cup is irrelevant. What is important is the cup is perfectly designed to evade any negative outcome. This is who Carisi is. He is such an ideal that Rollins' struggles, her potential to have any impact on the rel (+ or -) pretty much evaporates. Her role is passive because Carisi is providing all that is required to keep things safe and healthy. Doesn't leave much to explore compared to Bensler who have a far more dynamic rel filled w tugs and pulls.

That's how I feel about the character. And I can only hope her departure makes space for something more interesting to unfold. In terms of the actress herself I'm surprised that her ousting was chosen over Ice-T. His character is also very minor at this pt and even when they try to delve into his personal life it feels forced and contrived. Also, Giddish's acting far out-performs Ice-Ts. His scenes are often the ones that pull me out of the 'belief' of the story as I watch someone unconvincingly run his lines. I guess his legacy w the show is holding a lot of weight because retaining him over Giddish is an interesting choice. Tho never followed-up on she has been given some dramatic and shocking stories over the years and Giddish usually came thru in embodying the story.

I will admit that one of the biggest surprises in all this was finding out that it wasn't her choice. Cautiously I will say she came off in recent years as maybe physically unwell and like she wasn't loving being on the show anymore. So I just thought she had chosen to leave. I was wrong. I wish her the best- even a return at some point where she can be given far better stories to embody because Kelly Giddish is very capable of taking on complex storytelling. But the writing needs to be intentional and well-done. That's not on Giddish tho. I wish her nothing but the best.

Letting her go is a huge mistake. I'm not familiar enough with Molly Burnett to know if she'll be a good replacement, but I'm looking forward to seeing her.
