What did you think of the episode? I’m having slight difficulty with the “shaky cam” - too much camera movement makes it hard to watch at times. Your comments about the episode are welcome - join the discussion!

It was a meh episode
No Rollins this episode, and No Garland
My only main complaint is that we've seen these type of cases before so nothing new. I did however enjoy the performances and it's Jamie's best episode so far in my opinion. I'm noticing a lot complaining about the way Kat went off and saying that she was out of line, even some saying Olivia should fire her. While I feel she was a bit out of line, she's doing the same thing that others like Fin, Olivia and Elliot use to do so this is no different. I feel like a lot are only going after Kat since they don't like her. If it was their favorite character, no one would complain. Fin is my fave and to me he was being a jerk and out of line in "Venom" when mentioned Elliot's daughter out of anger. And by their logic, Cragen should've fired Olivia for doing the same thing back in her early detective days. 8.5/10
Btw, I had no complaints about Amanda's absence. 1. She's not a favorite so I didn't care and 2. Fin has been absent in more than 1 episode
I thought this was a strange episode. I'm not sure if they were trying to be edgy but I thought the repeated scenes (in the intro and during the court testimony) where Zoe/Kendra was on her video calls were trying to be titillating for viewers. The episode fell flat for me. It may have been the guest cast, which did nothing for me (including John Waters).
The shaky cam thing that you mentioned Chris is a annoyance to me too. What are they trying to get viewers to feel when they do it. It is supposed to make you feel like you're really there? I know my head and eyes don't jump around like that. What's with the weird low camera angles too? They've been doing this a lot this season. Why? It's as if they are filming the episode on an iPhone. An OLD iPhone.
I'm surprised that the defense didn't bring up the fact that since Zoe wasn't the one who reported the rape that maybe she didn't think it was rape until SVU approached her. I know they had the guy testify that he reported it, but why didn't they challenge Zoe. Did I miss it?
I might be in the minority here, but I loved it…primarily because it gave both Carisi and Peter Scanavino a chance to really shine. I had my doubts about the decision to make Carisi the ADA last season, especially since he so often seemed to be shown as almost subservient to “Miss Hadid.” Now, however, although I do miss him as part of the squad, I think he’s coming into his own. I like the internal conflict he seems to have, where he doubts himself but then turns in a brilliant court appearance.
Also on the Carisi front, I thought it was interesting that Kat told him she couldn’t believe he’d ever been a cop, and then Fin then subsequently suggested Carisi was moving further and further away from his cop roots.
On the technical side, I loved the way they shot some of the courtroom stuff, so that you could see reflections of other characters in the plexiglass shields; it was a really cool effect. I wasn’t bothered too much by the shaky cam, though I hope they don’t overuse it. I thought it added a bit to some of the drama being played out.
Alex Brightman turned in an excellent performance as Gabe and his final scene, where he finally broke completely from reality, was chilling.
I’m planning to do a rewatch on this one as soon as I can as the pace of everything seemed really fast, and I’m sure I missed a few things along the way!
Wonder what happen to Miss Hadid
I agree - Carisi’s move to the legal side was a win !
I have seriously mixed feelings about her…and I can’t bring myself to trust her at all. At the very least, I don’t think she’d hesitate to try to throw Carisi under the bus if she thought it would help her own chances to advance within the ranks of the DA’s office.
That being said, I hope they bring her back. As I said above, Carisi continues to gain confidence as an ADA, and I’d enjoy seeing the two of them face off. She’s been in the office longer, but her background is white collar crime. Carisi, on the other hand, has concrete experience with special victims’ cases and can use that to augment his case and trial work. (Perhaps we’ll get to witness him doing more of that? Again, I found it interesting that both Kat and Fin made references to the fact that he was a cop before he became an ADA.) Seeing him put her in her place would definitely be fun to watch!
The discovery laws they mentioned are real and very problematic. Im studying for a masters in criminal justice and with all types of crimes, a person has the right to come to your house. If it is a victim of domestic violence, victim of child molestation or victim of rape, the person can use these discovery laws as harrassment and it is a shame.
Im confused about the sentencing. The man got 7 years for attempted rape but in the episode "she paints for vengeance, the rapist got 7 years for an actual rape. If attempted rape is 7 years (which was a plea deal in this case) than an actual rape shouldve been even more time in prison in the episode I mentioned.
Kat and Carisi are bumping heads and some people are giving her a tough time because Carisi is a favorite. However everyone on this show has bumped heads at one point or another. Kat is passionate to a fault about these victims, but I don't mind seeing some conflict.
I think fin is right. The longer Carisi is in the DA office, the more he thinks like an attorney. It is true that he has to get out of that mind sometimes and into the mind of the criminal. Still love sonny tho, no hate.
I think this highlights how difficult it is tonget justice for sex workers. People already blame victims, sex workers more so. I think Carisi should have asked her on the stand why she chose that line of work. She was trying to support her dad and survive. This could have shined some sympathy rather than judgement alone.
This episode actually pissed me off, but only because of the court room scenes. In arraignment, Carisi missed a huge argument. The defendant had an order of protection against him, he was still not allowed to speak to the victim, even in that court scene. Carisi should have argued that the defendant has just demonstrated that he is incapable of abiding by order.
Then, at the victim's place, he again spoke to her. Even if he was allowed to be there by that stupid discovery law, he would not be able to speak to her. The officers should have arrested him. I am so glad to live in a state with strong constitutional victim's rights.
Finally, there was do much wrong with the court scene. It like they don't even follow the rules of evidence. I love law and order, but sometimes when they miss so many legal opportunities it erks me. But, I know, it's only to increase the drama aspect.
After last week's stunner, this episode just paled in comparison.
The character of Kat has been grating on my nerves lately. The actress is wonderful! Don't get me wrong. But Kat is just so pushy on absolutely everything. They gave her too many scenes with the same dialogue; we got where she's coming from. It would have been great to see more from Zoey or her father for that matter. Anyway, I'm looking forward to the next episode...
I may be alone on this, but this episode absolutely brought me to tears. OnlyFans is a huge industry right now so it felt relevant and there were several moments that hurt because they were so real. Kat makes sense to me because she's fresh. Call her woke, but she feels frustrated for Zoey because women are supposed to be able to control their bodies. Kat makes sense because we should all be angry that monetizing sexuality can remove a woman's right to say no. I also enjoy episodes where the evidence is there but the DAs have to make sure the jury sees past the defendant's game. I also liked that this episode really kept you guessing as to whether or not he would get away with it.
Enough of these "day in the life" intros. These need to be done like in the old days, where they would've had it start out with Larry watching the feed then suspecting something wrong and calling the police. Leight's style has NEVER been a good fit for this show, one that benefits from the viewer knowing as much about the figures in the case as the detectives do. We can't question whether a rape happened when we actually see it happen.
