Law & Order SVU Gets New Showrunner For Season 19

Great news!  Michael Chernuchin - a name familiar to Law & Order brand fans – has been named the new showrunner for Law & Order SVU for season 19. He was most recently showrunner and executive producer on the just-canceled Chicago Justice. He replaces Rick Eid, who will take over as showrunner for Chicago PD.

Chicago Justice has been canceled already?I saw it once and it was pretty good.It tales a lot to even stay on the air these days, I guess.

Once again, I'm surprised Julie Martin didn't get the job. But this is great news...hopefully our new showrunner can fix the trainwreck of a season we just had. Can't wait to see how he handles Season 19, and what stories he will come up with!

I feel the same way Draven...I just hope to God he does this super show justice (no pun intended)! SVU deserves to be run & handled with respect if for no other reason than it's last & entertained us for sooo many years...
The acting is ALWAYS excellent & the writing is usually great (with an occasional 'filler episode' which is usually just 'ho-hum'...)
I hope to see S2 continue with the love & integrity it had in S1 & continue to be the longest running TV show in TV history... JMO

Justice needed to just be an occasional storyline for PD. Not a stand alone show. NBC tried that with Trial by Jury and it failed.

What disappointed me is that they only gave it once season - and a short one at that. They never allowed it to build any momentum.

i think the only thing in the show that didn't quite work for me is scenario where the two detectives worked for the prosecutors office. It seemed like they had to explain in every episode why they were brought into a case BEFORE it was even a case the prosecution was handling. It felt a little clumsy at times. I wasn't sure they could keep that up and have it be believable for another season.

I really hope this new guy can bring Benson back to her former glory- season 18 had a few good eps-

As with Justice, however, I also had loved Trial By Jury and was angered that only one season had aired--and it was a season just as short as Justice.

So sorry that Chicago Justice wasn't given a chance at all. It had better ratings than Shades of Blue and Trial and Error, plus some other low rated shows that were renewed.Seems Greenblatt at NBC had a real dislike for Chicago Justice just as much as he loved Trial and Error. So much for ratings to determine if a show stays. It seems if you have a big name star ratings don't matter. I think Philip Winchester was great. I'm very glad SVU continues another season, hope Raul Esparza stays with the show.

Is it me or is NBC getting really weird about these shows. I admit that I haven't had the time to catch Chicago Justice (I guess that'll be what I do on Hulu this summer) but they really don't know how they're going to go on after SVU is over. I had been watching the previews for Shades of Blue and was thinking "are they trying to make her the new Benson?" Then I was watching Chicago PD after they did the crossover episodes with SVU and I was looking at Erin Lindsay like "maybe they're trying to turn her into the new Benson" (I know she's off the show now but still). They know the SVU story line is coming to an end and they've got to try to keep it going in some form. I'd be interested in what they could do in this next season with a new show runner in setting up the next chapter for some of these characters in another series. Maybe extend the "Law & Order" life into a newer better spin off. I'm hopeful guys.

@DaveInAtlanta - I too thought that Sophia was in it for the long haul and make this her signature role as Mariska did with Benson. I guess Sophia wasn't interested in putting herself in that box for years...?

I was upset finding out Sophia left. Who will be the new Benson now? Lol

Things I want for Season 19:
Better episodes. Sure, we got good ones this year, but only a select few.

NO MORE VICTIM BLAMING. None at all. Please.

A bit more RFTH stories, we could use the old teacher who ran off with his teen student off to California and caused a nationwide manhunt. We could also do one with the Supreme Court, who wants to make stealthing a form of rape. I'm sure Liv would have something to say on the subject.

At least ONE new detective. ONE.

And I know I've said this before, but MAYBE, just MAYBE, we could finally see the episode that caused a stir--and got shelved as a result. I'd really love to see Unstoppable air.

It would be so cool if Sophia Bush as Erin Lindsay transferred from Chicago PD to SVU. It would be setup for many more Chicago crossovers on the future, especially as we didn't have any crossovers this year.

More episodes. Or at least less hiatus. Thanks to that mess, SVU lost a million viewers as compared to Season 17.

I agree with all of Draven's points. I Googled stealthing and that could make for an interesting episode.

I had a feeling that Kirk Acevedo was being set up as a new cast member on the show, but he was much underutilised in the season finale. I'd suggest Frankie Muniz - he was a great guest star in /Criminal Minds/ more than a few years ago now.

Based on the last Chicago P.D. episode, I was thinking Sophia Bush as Erin Lindsay was being set up for a role in the FBI drama Wolf is planning. Maybe we'll see a backdoor pilot for that in SVU this coming year.
