Since when is Tucker the character whose life choices we should care about? Because I most certainly don't. There is Barba who had no development for year and a half. But we get to know about Tucker's motivations, future plans, personal life. Oh, give me a break, show. I still think that making Olivia date him was a terrible decision and made me question Olivia's integrity and judgement. Not looking forward to this episode at all. But thank you for update.

I think this is Burke's swan song

I wonder now if Eid plans to kill Tucker, since we KNOW Olivia will never be allowed complete happiness. I used to watch, wondering if Munch would "go down in the line," as Elliot used to say. I think english2791 is probably right, since hey, new showrunner, new year. I *always* enjoy Bobby Burke's acting, especially since he made me DESPISE Tucker for so long, but we all know 'happiness' is a death knell for most characters -- without conflict, there is no growth. As much as it's been good for Olivia and Noah to have Tucker, he's probably on his way out.

If so, I hope they give him a great 'death.' Chew some scenery before you exit!

I kind of wonder if Munch will be back for an ep in 2017? (Richard doesn't tell me anything too far in advance, because even I like to be surprised every now and again. LOL!) :)

Does anyone know why Julie Martin isn't the showrunner now? I was surprised when Eid was brought on board, since (financially) almost EVERYONE would like to be a showrunner and she certainly has the writing 'chops,' as well as the years of experience. Then again, maybe she wants to have a life, since it's an all-consuming job.

@Cardinal @english2791 @rheia123 The title of the episode may be very telling. My guess is Tucker will be jettisoned in some manner and Benson will be moving on to the "next chapter" in her life. Hopefully they won't kill him off; Tucker used to one of those characters that I loved to "hate" but when they niced him up and gave him a relationship with Benson, I lost all interest. Still, I don't want to see him dead but that would be an easy way out for the character.

@Cardinal - as far as Julie Martin, I was surprised she wasn't made show runner, especially since I thought that Rick Eid was not going to be in NYC to do the job. Maybe things changed? Who knows, Julie may not have wanted the hassle of taking on a show that was so long in the tooth and risk being the one that killed it forever? It's a mystery.

Tell The Belz he is greatly missed!

I'm with Cardinal, there's no way that Olivia is gonna be allowed complete happiness as long as the series goes since, It is a Crime Drama show. Tucker is gonna be jettisoned off the show in some manner. I'm not sure if playing stay at home adoptive dad waiting for Olivia to come home is his ideal retirement plan.

As much as I enjoyed despising Tucker (mainly for dating Liv) I won't miss him if he ends up leaving.

Quite frankly this episode also disappoints me with no Barba. What is up that?
First Unstoppable, then Great Expectations and now this one? Why is Raul Esparza omitted from those three?! This episode is gonna be hard to watch.

Per Julie Martin on Twitter Raul Esparza will return for the 3rd episode in January and for the time being Tucker is only contemplating retirement. I also do not like 'Tuckson.' Liv should have tossed him off the plane on their trip to Paris.

I totally agree with everything y'all had to say^^...Tucker was the bad guy/villan that everybody 'loved to hate' & all of a sudden out of nowhere, he became Mr. Wonderful??? How did this even happen? It's so out of character for Lt. Benson to date someone she despised because he had ALWAYS been so mean & hateful to everybody in the SVU unit, then she dates him? I don't think so...NOT cannon st all even a little bit!
On the other hand I can see her with Barba because they have a warm & caring relationship & it seems to be more than just friends' (shall we say)...
I get the feeling that whomever decided to join Tucker & Benson was listening to too many 'happily ever after fans who were probably under 25'...Anyway I get the feeling that something just isn't going right for S18 YET, but hoping time will correct this & SVU will survive because it's my favorite show! We can all thank Warren Leight for joining Benson and Tucker as BF/GF. And making it come off as a 24/7 bed of roses >_>

I'm mostly indifferent towards Tucker, but he seems to have changed, and Benson is a character who is capable of showing forgiveness. So ... what's the big deal?

I mean, I'm all for putting the portrayal of her personal life on the backburner. But why shouldn't Benson be happy for once? She has moved on to so many "next chapters" during the course of the show already. And there certainly won't ever be a lack of work-related drama.

The "strong, independent, lonely woman in the big city" schtick is getting old after 17 seasons. Let's have a look:

Rollins: single (unless she *is* dating Carisi after all LOL)
Carisi: same
Fin: his love life is never talked about, and I doubt it will be.
Barba: same

Why can't *one* main character be in a long-term relationship?

Having her break up with Tucker in the next ep would seem very unrealistic to me after the romantic scene in 17x23. It would emphasise the writers'/producers' loss of direction and the lack of continuity even more (although I'm not completely hating season 18 so far).

@fire-and-icicle - for me the big deal is that Tucker was very obsessed with catching bad cops to a point when nothing or nobody else mattered. From more recent events, Cassidy who Olivia said she loved, was almost killed because Tucker blew his cover. I wouldn't be able to forgive somebody for risking my loved one's life and go on a date with him a year later. IMO Tucker didn't redeem himself. I agree with @Js McFail that he did sudden 180 from SVU' adversary to a prince on a white horse. That intro into the relationship where he saved her life as a trained negotiator (because of course he is) and she then forgave him for everything is an emotional manipulation IMO. Is she a weak "damsel in distress" and he is a strong savior? I don't think so. So that relationship is build on some very disturbing foundations.

I don't think they will kill him though. I don't like him, but I don't want to see more sad Olivia. She went through terrible things lately. Mike, being held at gunpoint, PTSD, some drinking and so on. She deserves something nice. Being with somebody who has nothing to do with a law enforcement would be interesting for a change. I don't see it as a "Tucker or Olivia being unhappy forever" kind of situation. There are other men in NYC.
But I'm worried that we'll be stuck with Tucker for longer. I read her comments about how things get complicated sometimes only as some trouble in paradise. More obstacles that will just strengthen their relationship. So another filler storyline. I hope I'm wrong.
I'm all for other characters to have more screen time and personal lives. Not Carisi though, him being perfect at everything got super boring and make me roll my eyes over him quite regularly.

I am afraid with rumors and comments all over the place that Raúl has told his friends he is leaving the show at the end of this season, the downward spiral of the plots will continue. With what they have done to weaken Barba's character I don't blame Raúl and we all knew that he would return to Broadway at some point but he is far and away the best actor on the show and I am not sure I will continue to watch when he is gone. Just a bloody shame we had to see Barba turned into someone Benson beats down with her endless righteousness since he started out being such a strong and compelling presence.

@RescueDogMom: Come on, a statement like this and you're not providing any sources? Like we need more rumors at this point.

So what's happened to Unstoppable?

Chris Zimmer said...

@gahks - I haven't heard anything yet on a new air date. I wonder if they are waiting until after the inauguration? I hope they don't kill the episode altogether.

JSM said...

With all that's happening in our fragile world situation right now, I wouldn't be surprised if they held it to a much later air date OR maybe next season IF SVU is even renewed that is! (Hoping the later happens but never been less sure TBT)

GET OUT. The heck is wrong with you? What did Rollins ever do to you or anyone else to warrant that?
