The special victims case in “Complicated” wasn’t very complicated, in fact, it seemed very familiar. That’s because Law & Order SVU already did an episode in season 10 titled “Stranger” that followed a virtually identical story line of an imposter presenting herself as a girl who’d gone missing years prior. It was no surprise that the missing girl had been killed by her brother, the body disposed of by his father in order to shield the boy from any consequences of his actions.
Was it completely inappropriate for NYPD to be digging out the girl's body and then have Carisi take it away, wrapped in the original blanket? I would think that forensics would be there to dig it out, collect evidence, and then properly transport the body to be further examined.
Luckily, this episode wasn’t all about the SVU case. Benson’s problems with Sheila Porter and the custody of Noah ramped up. Benson and Trevor Langan end up in court facing Sheila Porter and her attorney. Benson is quick to argue her case at every step, despite what seems like Trevor’s efforts to calm her down. Later, we get a tearful scene with Benson as she confides with Barba on the custody case. Barba thinks Sheila Porter can’t get custody after 3 years and Benson knows the law is on her side. But Benson worries because the judge is allowing Sheila’s filing for visitation. Benson struggles that she doesn’t know if it’s right to keep Noah from his only living relative. Ultimately, Benson takes the high road and meets with Sheila, where Sheila explains her own struggles with her daughter Ellie - Noah’s mother. Later, Benson has invited Sheila into her home to meet Noah, who is quick to call her grandma and hold her hand while he shows her his room. Will this remain a happy arrangement or will things turn bad down the road for Benson? We all know that it’s hard for anyone to live happily ever after on Law & Order SVU.
In the original press release with the episode details, it stated that “Carisi's (Peter Scanavino) conversation with a newspaper reporter puts him in hot water.” Did I fall asleep during this episode and miss this? I certainly don’t recall anything like this. Maybe it will turn up in a deleted scene? (Note - yes, there are three deleted scenes on this issue, posted below.)
The cameo by Isaiah Thomas felt shoehorned in and very awkward. If ever there was a deleted scene in an episode, this should have been one of them.
Note: THREE deleted scenes have been added below, which explains the newspaper reporter issue.

Law & Order SVU “No Good Reason” was a preachy episode, devoid of drama, clearly geared to speak to the teen and pre-teen audience. (I suspect the older the viewer, the less interested they were in this episode.) While anyone can be cyberbullied or sexually assaulted, this story focused on a group of high school students who are likely representative of what’s going on in many high schools across the country. The victim was Mandy, a self-absorbed teen, and involved her equally superficial circle of friends.
I was quickly bored when a long opening scene showed how Mandy was using social media and her vlog to highlight her shallow life. But suddenly, her video turned to the dark side when something happened to rock her world, and not in a good way. Her parents get worried when Mandy goes missing, and the SVU gets involved. They find that someone has posted a photo of her from a party while she was unconscious, and someone had also written on her partially clothed body with a Sharpie. Eventually, the detectives track her down and hear that Mandy had also been raped at that same party.
An unexciting investigation ensues, with one of the boys from the party - Andrew - eventually admitting to forcing himself on Mandy. Apparently he wanted her to like him so badly but she didn’t have those same feelings, so he wrongfully took matters into his own hands. Barba cuts a deal for rape 3, 18 months, 4 years probation, and Andrew must go on the registry. Benson adds that Andrew has to allocute in open court so the whole school doesn’t think Mandy is a liar. He does so. Benson and Barba get their win.
The episode wraps with Benson - later that same day as the allocution - at the high school auditorium, on stage with Mandy, speaking to the students about bulling and sexual assault. She asks the students to stand up if they have been bullied, hazed, hurt by gossip, sexually assaulted, or a victim pf violence. Quite a few students are standing, and Benson reminds them they are all in this together, and they have the power to change this by being more accepting and compassionate. Short testimonials from some of Mandy’s circle of friends in the crowd follow, and I find tedium setting in. Maybe it’s because it’s been decades since I’ve been in high school and the problems are generally the same, but I was completely disinterested in this final scene. Yes, having these kinds of talks with students can get some of them thinking about these issues, but it will take more than one speech by Benson to change the culture. (NBC has provided a video of this scene which is embedded below, catch it while it is available.)
We also see Benson on the courthouse steps being served with a notice of motion from Sheila Porter’s attorney. Porter is asking the court for Benson’s financial disclosure and a psychological evaluation; Porter is trying to challenge Benson’s fitness as a parent. Of course, this story line will continue, and we can only wonder how long this arc will be drawn out this season. Hopefully it can wrap up quickly so other characters on the show can have some drama of their own.

Special note: I’m still under the weather, so this is an abbreviated recap and review.
Law & Order “Contrapasso” involved the case of a former teacher who, years prior, toyed sexually with his young female students and it came back to haunt him. Three women, one who stated she was raped by this teacher, decide to meet him at a hotel and confront him, and one of the women decides to exact vengeance by taking a knife and performing an impromptu “gonadectomy.” (This is quite a surprise for both Fin and Carisi.) This leaves the SVU and ADA Barba in an odd position; the women were wrong to assault the man, but he needed to be held accountable for the rape years prior. The only thing that made this case stand out was the impassioned closing argument by Barba (great work by Raúl Esparza) about what exactly is fair and just. Surprisingly, the man is found guilty of rape, the only proof being the woman’s word and a poem she wrote while in high school. I’m not convinced that was enough to make a case. What I don’t know – and maybe I missed it – was if the women have to answer for their attack on the teacher.
Benson also thinks she’s in the clear with the DA’s office regarding her care of Noah, but finds out from Trevor Langan that Noah’s maternal grandmother now wants to pursue custody of Noah. Benson is livid that Langan didn’t have previous knowledge that there was any relatives alive, and reminds him that the judge even fast tracked her adoption. But Langan fires back that Benson has her own resources to find out that information, which Benson counters that she can’t use those resources for personal reasons. She eventually tells him to leave her office. At the end of the episode, Sheila Porter appears at Benson’s front door. (I wonder what kind of security Benson has in her building that someone can just walk right up to her front door without being buzzed in or cleared to enter.) We know this story arc will continue, but sadly I’m not very interested in it.

Special note: I’m still under the weather, so this is an abbreviated recap and review.
Law & Order SVU “Mood” was a decent episode, albeit uneven, with the case solved almost too quickly. The SVU discovered they had a serial rapist on their hands, only after discounting the first rape victim as a possible liar. It’s obvious that there is a drive to make Benson and Rollins more friendly towards each other. In this case, they share their thoughts on the case with Benson taking Rollins’ advice that the victim isn’t as truthful as Benson wants to believe (thinking the victim may be one who must “make up fairy tales” just to get through the day). Luckily, during the course of the investigation, Carisi sees a bracelet stolen by the rapist on the wrist of the suspect’s mother, and a chase ensues. (This bracelet scenario is reminiscent of a Law & Order (I think) episode where a stolen bracelet is spotted on the mother of the suspect. UPDATE: I've been told it was an SVU episode titled "Soulless". ) The victim meets his death by falling off a building while trying to escape, Carisi unable to hang on. Case closed!
Benson, meanwhile, is being questioned by someone from the DA’s office about her treatment of Noah. Apparently Noah has whined that Benson works too much, and, coupled with his bruise discovered in last week’s episode, Benson looks like she is a child abuser. Of course, the investigator asks the question point blank if Benson abuses Noah, which is a dumb question to pose to any suspected abuser. What person would answer yes? When the investigator quizzes Benson on Dr. Lindstrom and William Lewis, this is Benson’s breaking point. She is forceful in her defense – she only briefly took her eyes off Noah - and it is clear that Benson is already reaching wits end on this issue. (Of course, children can be killed in seconds when one takes their eyes off them, but children can also make quick moves which can put them in jeopardy even when one IS watching them.)
Later, Benson hears that it was Brian Cassidy who may be the cause of these abuse allegations, and she heatedly confronts him in the street. Apparently Cassidy had loose lips when it came to the Lindstrom issue, and Benson is furious. This story arc is only starting folks, so hang on for the ride!
