Law & Order SVU “The Longest Night Of Rain” Recap & Review

Yes. there is a halo!

Farewell and rest in peace to Ed Tucker, the guy that, for many years, Law & Order SVU fans loved to hate. (Much appreciation to Robert John Burke for his layered portrayal of Tucker over the years.) His career in IAB, with his near-obsession with nailing the SVU, morphed into near-marriage with Olivia Benson. It was an odd match which strangely worked, that is, until Benson broke it off (in Law & Order SVU “Chasing Theo) I believe) .

In “The Longest Night of Rain”, Benson fears seeing him for the first time since she broke it off, but before the episode ends, she is forced to deal with the fact that Tucker has terminal cancer, and he later takes his own life and disappears from her life forever. It was a rare multi-tissue tear-jerker for Law & Order SVU, coupled with relaying a very serious message about suicides in law enforcement. The writing was exceptional, with the story by Peter Blauner and Warren Leight, teleplay by Peter Blauner.

Benson visits her psychiatrist, Dr. Lindstrom, because of fears of seeing Tucker at his retirement party, and at least she acknowledges the incongruity of it, considering the more horrific things Benson has experienced. She has regrets about the pain she has caused him, but later finds that Tucker has moved on and recently married. During his retirement party, a former police officer throws a drink at him, saying Tucker is evil. When Tucker appears evasive about what that was about,  and when the officer kills herself in her car outside the party and leaves a video message, Benson switches into SVU mode and gets suspicious about Tucker's involvement in the assault or covering it up. It bothered me a bit that Benson was unsure about Tucker, a man she knew so well that they nearly married. But as the episode progressed, it was clear that because Benson DID know him so well she felt he was hiding something. It just wasn’t what Benson expected. Sadly, we learn that Tucker has lung and brain cancer, and has only 6 months to a year to live. He decides to not let nature take its course.

Benson may not have much of a relationship in the future with Dr. Lindstrom. Not only did she ask to meet him under false pretenses, she also pressured him for information on his patients that she knows full well she can’t get by simply asking for it. Benson’s singular focus on her cases can annoy me and I’m glad that Lindstrom put her in her place when she started making unreasonable demands. Having Carisi take Lindstrom to court to get patient information won’t help mend fences either. After Lindstrom has put in the effort to build trust between him and Benson during their sessions, she destroyed that trust in a matter of minutes. Fin wondered why anyone in the force would tell Lindstrom anything, for fear of being sent to the “rubber gun squad” but now we know that Lindstrom won’t breach any patient confidentiality (unless forced by the court I suspect). I’d be surprised if Lindstrom even continues to work with the NYPD after this. Bill Irwin finally got a chance to bring a spark to Dr. Lindstrom.

In all this sadness, there is one thing that gave me a chuckle. It was when Benson asks Carisi if the case with Gary goes to trial, how long this will take, suggesting months and Carisi says it could be years. As most SVU cases we see are wrapped up usually in about a week, why would this one take months or years? Maybe I missed something, but I thought Gary’s admission to Tucker that Benson and Fin overheard would be enough to move the case along with the usual SVU speed. This was one case where it would have been satisfying to see the victim – who took her own life early in the episode – get justice.

The episode was also a visual delight, with plenty of location scenes and interesting camera angles. My favorite shot was near the end when Tucker and Benson revisited the walkway at the water’s edge with the Statue of Liberty in view as seen in ”Heartfelt Passages”. It closed the loop perfectly from those happier times he and Benson shared together.

Update February 5, 2020 - a video of a deleted scene has been added after the recap.

Here is the recap:

Benson enters Dr. Lindstrom’s consulting room and thanks Lindstrom for staying late, and he replies “Of course…Captain.” He congratulates her and she thanks him, adding she owes some of that to him. He laughs and asks if she is coming to thank him, and she sits down and says no. She mentions Ed Tucker, saying she has been invited to his retirement party tonight and she hasn’t seen him since she broke it off. She tells him it’s crazy; she’s had guns in her face and she is afraid to see an ex-boyfriend. Lindstrom asks if she knows what she is afraid of, and Benson says regret, or the pain that she caused him. He advises that whatever her regrets and her guilt, it’s harder in the long run to leave things unsaid.

Elsewhere,  Rachel Wilson dresses for the evening and then adds a gun. The Reverend comes down the stairs and asks if she is headed out, and Rachel explains that an old police colleague is retiring and she wants to help with the send-off. The Reverend comments it is NYPD and asks if she is sure that is a good idea. She replies that she won’t stay long and won’t drink.

Benson arrives at the bar where Tucker’s retirement party is being held and she comments to Fin, who had already arrived, that she didn’t expect to see him at Tucker’s retirement party. He explains he is there for Benson, not for Tucker. She sees Rollins and Carisi, and says she sees Rollins brought reinforcements, Rollins commenting they let Carisi out for an hour.  Benson thanks them all. Benson sees Tucker standing next to another woman, and she asks the detectives who is the woman with Tucker. Fin questions why she is asking them, and Carisi wisecracks that they got Benson in the divorce.   Rollins says the bartender told her that is his new wife, she is a nurse and they eloped a month ago. Benson, with a look of surprise, says, “Oh. Good for him.”

As Tucker’s friend Gary Wald makes a speech, Gary jokes that when he decided to hold the farewell party for Tucker, as he was IAB, where would they hold the party, in phone booth? Everyone laughs, and Tucker comments to his wife that this is how it’s going to go. Gary adds when you have a friend like Ed, you are blessed. As Gary continues to speak, Fin asks if he is giving a toast or bragging.

Meanwhile, Rachel sits in her car, drinking.

Law & Order SVU “She Paints For Vengeance” Recap & Review

I’ll make this simple. I disliked this episode. Almost all of it.

What I liked:
While I believe it would not be appropriate for Carisi’s first trial to be that of a celebrity, and I think his career as an ADA has progressed abnormally fast, I do think his move to the DA’s office is a good one for the character’s development. This role suits Peter Scanavino very well. But that’s all I liked with this episode.

What I disliked or questioned:
Is it really that easy to hang posters and a huge billboard in the city with no one noticing or questioning it while it’s happening?

It was too much of a coincidence that it was Benson - the SVU captain - who saw the artwork, understood the meaning,  and decided to check into its origin. What a nice change of pace it would have been if it was Fin or  Rollins or even someone not associated with SVU to make the discovery and connection.  Of course it had to be Benson. I cringed during the shoehorned-in Noah scene; his presence was completely unnecessary. (I’ve made it clear in the past that I don’t care for the superfluous Noah scenes so my feelings shouldn’t surprise anyone.)

I think I've raised this issue in the past:  should Benson be connecting people with defense lawyers, especially for a crime that has nothing to do with the SVU? She's not a social worker, she’s an SVU Captain.    At least when the problem developed on the SVU doorstep, Benson was aware she brought it on herself. I suspect Benson will never learn to steer clear of situations that are outside her purview; she has a need to be the fixer or a hero.

I know there are many rape cases that are “he said/she said” but this one didn’t have one scintilla of evidence. The only thing in favor of Monica was the police report that was tossed by “do-nothing Donnie”. If this police report was the only shred of evidence they had, it would have helped had we seen the officer testify to its existence and later destruction.  It would have also been interesting to see how Counselor Barth would tear apart that testimony.  Yes, I know this episode is only about 40 minutes long and they can't include everything, but it's their choice of what they include and exclude that sometimes bewilders me.

The victim would have been far more sympathetic and the case more compelling if the victim was black (and the rapist could have been white).  I don't think Law & Order SVU does a very good job in showing crimes committed against women of color, and this would have been a good opportunity to do so.

Of course, Benson had to be the one to push Carisi in the right direction in order to get the win. I wonder why it couldn’t have been one of his own peers or his boss? It’s a rhetorical question, I already know the answer.

I’m surprised, with how savvy Counselor Barth is and considering she had been a judge, that she  allowed her client to testify, no matter how much he may have insisted.

It was predictable that Carisi would win.  No suspense here.

I have no words on that ending. No wait, I do have words. That billboard with Benson and Carisi as angels was saccharine and laughable. Besides, we all know that Benson is not an angel but a saint and she should have a halo (wink). It must be so easy to get a billboard put up and paid for in New York, especially when one appears to be a starving artist that has to work in a strip club for money.  Who paid for that billboard?

Side notes:
When Carisi asks Fin why he’s at the strip club, Fin comments they are short on male detectives.  (Are there no other male law enforcement staff at the 16th precinct?)   Later, Fin, while questioning someone about the sexual assault who complains about being surrounded by women, Fin commiserates, mentioning he has Rollins and a female captain. On the latter situation,  I understand Fin made those comments to get the guy he was questioning to open up, but considering his comment to Carisi earlier, I think Fin may truly be feeling a little outnumbered.

One of the guest stars, Orfeh, is married to Law & Order SVU’s Andy Karl (who played the deceased Mike Dodds).

The episode was directed by Mariska Hargitay. Her skills have improved quite a bit since her first directorial outing and she did a fine job here.

Here is the recap:

Monica Russo paints in her home studio. Her boyfriend arrives with some food. He compliments her painting. She passes on the food has to leave to go to work as she is late and wants the tip money. She says the place is jumping and is kind of fun. She gets her bike and leaves, grabbing a scarf before she exits.

Monica is working the pole at a strip club. She gets off the stage and Arianna tells her there is a pot of whales in the back. She also hears from the manager, Jared, that Markeevious is looking for her and he has that hungry look. She walks up to Markeevious who tells the girl on his lap he is making a substitution. He asks Monica if she is ready for the VIP room. He doesn’t want her and Arianna like the last time, he thinks Monica is more than enough. She leads him to the room.

Later, Monica leaves the club with a blank stare on her face. She says she is just tired. As she leaves the club, she sees her bike, still hooked onto a pole, but the front tire is missing. She throws something at the bike in anger and swears.

Later, at a police station, an officer tells Monica that is all he needs right now. She asks the officer what happens next, and he sighs and says an investigation. She nods and he says dryly that he will call her. Dejected, she leaves. Sometime later in her studio, she is on the phone, telling the person on the other end of the call that she came in before Christmas, telling them her name. At yet another later date, in her studio working on a canvas with frustration, she tells the person on the phone that she’s left a dozen messages, giving her name again. And again later, she is working on her art, on the phone, getting even more aggravated, then tells the person on the other end of the phone to never mind, and she hangs up. Her boyfriend, who is there with her, comments that is has been over a month. Monica says, “Screw this. And them.” Soon after, she is outside with her boyfriend, spreading paste on a poster on a wall with a wide paint brush. She comments they thought they could crush her, but she will burn them to the ground. He agrees, saying to burn that house down, burn it to the ground.

What is likely the next morning, Noah is on a scooter on the sidewalk and Benson tells him to slow down. He stops and Benson notices something on the wall; it’s posters of a bike with what looks like an angel with its eyes covered behind it, along with the words “a bad dream?” Noah sees another group of posters with an image of a police officer with a pig face, and the caption “Do nothing Donnie asked what I was wearing.” There is yet another group of posters and Noah asks if this is a movie. Benson looks at them and says it is certainly not a kids movie. The third group of images has a devil, spearing an angel, which is captioned “Shut up you angel whore.” Noah is stunned and points out in surprise another sight to Benson, telling her to look up there. It is a huge billboard on the wall of a woman dressed like a Wonder Woman-like person, shooting fire at a strip club, with the caption “On December 10th I was raped. I told my boss, I told NYPD. They tried to shut me up. But silence makes me louder. Benson tells Noah to run ahead, she will catch up.

Benson tells Rollins she is walking down 10th Avenue with Noah – Rollins, looking at an image of the billboard, says there is a lot of anger there; rape and a strip club, certainly credible. Kat comments it says she went to NYPD in December, saying she will check. Fin adds that it must have been the local precinct. Rollins states something happened to her. Benson quietly replies yeah. Kat informs them there were two rape reports files in Manhattan South on that date; one was a DV and the other one was SVU’s. Benson observes that neither of them was her. Benson thinks this is an outcry, and tells Fin and Kat to check local strip clubs and instructs Rollins to check the billboard company. She adds that whoever she is, they’ll want to find her.

At Hook, Line & Stripper at 771 10th Avenue on Wednesday, January 8, Fin and Kat show the image on the poster to Toni, who appears to be a manager at the club, and she doesn’t know her. She adds their dancers are safe as there are cameras everywhere. She admits not inside the VIP room but she has her bird dogs. She explains that means she posts a bouncer outside the private rooms and a girl just has to holler and they will be in the door. Another woman is heard saying that is a bunch of BS and she storms in from another room, calling out to Toni and saying that TJ keeps playing that old-school white boy crap. She looks at Fin and then says she is sorry. Toni asks to give them a minute, and the woman realizes Fin and Kat are cops, saying they are here about the billboard. She says all she knows is she doesn’t work here, adding Toni takes care of them, not like some place she can name. Toni comments like the woman’s last club, Topaz, who says their VIP room is more like act sexy and try not to get raped.

Law & Order SVU “Must Be Held Accountable” Recap & Review

At the end of part 1 of this story, Law & Order SVU “Can’t Be Held Accountable”, Detective Frank Bucci has gone off the deep end and has stormed into a session Rollins is having with Dr. Hanover. Rollins made a critical error by leaving her gun in her car, and she is defenseless when Bucci has his gun pointed at Rollins’ head.  He wants his kids safe and Steve Getz in jail. “Must Be Held Accountable” picks up where we left off.

I’m not a big fan of hostage or kidnapping story lines involving lead characters as 99.9% of the time they play out the same way – the person taken hostage or kidnapped is later released unharmed, after a long search or standoff. The process of tracking down Rollins was predictable and without suspense. After Bucci held two people at gunpoint, he gets what amounts to a slap on the wrist because he’s ex-NYPD, and Rollins and Dr. Hanover don't want to press charges. If anything, they should have been harder on him because he IS ex-NYPD. He also is rewarded for his actions by Getz being arrested. Carisi doesn’t want to put Rollins through any more distress, treating Rollins like she is a helpless woman made of fragile bone china who can’t handle standing up for herself and will shatter at the slightest touch.

While we’re on the subject of Rollins, during her kidnapping ordeal, she admits to some of her flaws. She told Bucci when she first met him she thought he was nice and she can’t handle nice. She explains her dad treated her mom like crap who spent her life chasing dirt bags as she thought that was she was worth, and Rollins thinks she is just like her. She’s worried her girls will grow up the same way, feeling like they don’t deserve to be happy. She admits she’s made plenty of bad choices, having two kids by two different dads, who were guys she slept with for no good reason. Basically, she is shaming herself. She complains about her career, being a third grade detective for 8 years. (Maybe if she wouldn't make careless errors like leaving her gun in her car...)  She did not admit to the gambling, an interesting, possibly telling, omission. We didn’t hear anything we didn’t already know about Rollins. Rollins seems to think that she’s made more progress with facing her demons with Bucci than with Dr. Hanover. This bothered me, as it implied that Rollins needed to be held captive by a man to admit her flaws.   Despite her ordeal, I still feel nothing for Rollins.

I was cringing early on when we had to deal with a scene involving Benson and Noah. I’ve never been a fan of these awkwardly inserted scenes just to make us aware that Benson is a mom and Noah has talent. But what annoyed me more was that Benson should know better than to be having a FaceTime or video call while walking at the same time. It’s not safe, it’s just as bad as texting and driving. Oddly, she stops when she takes the call from Rollins and sees she is distressed, so I guess we know who is really the important one in this relationship. I bet Benson didn’t even notice the dejected look on Noah’s face when Benson told him to show him his stuff in person when she got home.

Kat asks a loaded question, wondering as Rollins knows her kidnapper, was there any chance she was in on it or maybe lost perspective? Benson and Carisi looked at her with such disgust, but I think it was a fair question. Kat doesn’t know Rollins so it would be normal for her to ask an uncomfortable question. It was also beneath Carisi to later address her as “officer” in such a condescending tone. Carisi should have just stopped after his explanation and left off the “Is that okay with you, officer?”

As we saw in part 1, “Can’t Be Held Accountable”, Steve Getz hanged himself in his cell. This episode shows the same outcome. Kat raises a theory that Getz is not really dead, but based on what we’ve seen, he is, and at his own hand. It’s a shame that they showed Getz hanging himself as it would have been far more interesting – and maybe spawned a new story line later – to not show how it happened, raising similar questions as in the real-life death of Jeffrey Epstein. As Getz is dead and the victims won’t have their day in court, does that mean that the evidence collected about all those other people implicated is ignored? I would be interested in seeing how far up Getz’s influence had reached and/or how many others were sexual predators like Getz. Maybe this is saved for another day?

Here is the recap:

The episode opens with a brief recap of part 1 of this story, Law & Order SVU “Can’t Be Held Accountable”, including a replay of the final scene from that episode.

Rollins arrives at Dr. Hanover’s and thanks her for seeing her after such a long day, saying they were blindsided by the Getz case. Hanover says she has been following. Rollins starts to talk about it but the doctor wants to start with Rollins’ father this time. Rollins says it is no big deal, explaining he called and is getting married and wants her to bring her girls to the wedding. She said she shot it down. The door opens and Bucci storms in, startling the doctor who asks who is he? He pulls out a gun and when Rollins reaches for hers, she realizes she doesn’t have it. Bucci explains she left her gun in the car and she shouldn’t do that. He points it at her and Rollins asks what is he doing? He says he wants his kids home safe, and shouts he wants Getz in jail. Rollins tells him this isn’t the way. Bucci yells at her to sit down, and she complies. Rollins asks Bucci not to do this. He points the gun to her head and states he is way past that. He wants Getz in jail, asking if she hears him. As Rollins stares at the gun pointed inches from her head, Rollins calmly says okay.

Meanwhile, Benson exits a store and it’s Noah, and she explains she is just getting into the car. He says he just wanted to tell you that they asked him to do a part in The Nutcracker. Benson is thrilled. As Noah asks if she wants to see his solo, Benson sees a call coming in from Rollins and she tells Noah to show her at home. She cuts the call short and answers Rollins’ call, and Rollins tells her everyone is okay. Benson stops walking and ask what is going on and where is she. A voice says she doesn’t need to know that, and he says it is Frank Bucci. She tells him to take it easy, and Bucci says Getz as his girls and he has one of Benson’s. She tries to calm him but he says she won’t get Rollins back until Getz goes down. She suggests they talk about this, but he says he knows Benson and she gets things done and to do it. She tells him not to hang up and he counters that he is not negotiating. Benson looks stunned.

In her car, Benson calls Fin at SVU who explains he was just punching out. Benson states that he’s not, saying Bucci went rogue and he is holding Rollins and has a weapon. She doesn’t know where they are, and instructs him to call TARU and start location processing on their cars and cells. Fin thinks she was headed home and that Bucci may have followed her, and Benson says to alert ESU and she will meet them there now.

Back in Dr. Hanover’s office, Rollins and the doctor are sitting on the floor and cuffed or tied to a table, and Bucci smashes her phone. Rollins explains that won’t make a difference as the last ping will still be in the vicinity. He isn’t worried. He takes some pills and drinks some whisky. Rollins and the doctor try to talk him down but he still holds the gun to her head. She says she sorry and is scared and he tells her to just do what he asks her to do.

At the apartment of Detective Amanda Rollins at 355 West 117th Street on Thursday, November 21, Benson arrives with ESU Captain Sasso and she explains that Rollins’ cell is off and she doesn’t have a land line. She adds Bucci has a gun to her head and she has two small daughters and she is not taking any chances. He says they will move forward and establish communication inside. Fin, there with Kat, explains Rollins’ and Bucci’s phones are disabled and TARU said it would take an hour to triangulate. Benson asks about GPS for their cars and Kat explains they are checking license plate readers and EZ Pass. Fin says he is an ex-cop and knows how to go under the radar. Benson tells Fin to run his house, have his old squad pull his ten card and find out how many guns he owns and what type. Kat moves off to handle this. As ESU tries to look inside the building, Fin comments Bucci likes Rollins and doesn’t think he will hurt her. Benson coldly says that men kill women they like all the time and he knows that. Fin says he does know that. An ESU officer explains they got some images but it is unlikely they are inside; there are two sleeping children in a back bedroom and in another room a woman that Benson thinks is Rollins’ new nanny, Sienna. They see no one is in distress and decide to move in.

Inside, Benson, with Fin and ESU, knocks on the door and announces herself to Sienna. Sienna opens the door and asks if everything is okay. Benson asks if she and the girls are okay, and Sienna says they are sleeping. Benson asks if she knows where Rollins is, and Sienna replies no, saying she came home after work and had an errand and said she’d be back at 7:30. Fin comments he will call Carisi and see if he knows where she went. Rollins’ daughter Jesse asks where is her mother and Benson replies she is working.

Back in Dr. Hanover’s office, Rollins tries to convince him this is not the way but he is not buying it, saying anything she tries he is one step ahead and not afraid to go down for this. The doorbell rings and the doctor doesn’t know who it is, saying Rollins was her last patient. He explains she has a doorbell app on her iPad which is on her desk. Bucci looks at it and it is her son, saying he forgot his key. Bucci tells her to get rid of him before she does. The doctor explains to Dylan that she is in the middle of a group session and tells him to go to his pop’s in Brooklyn. He argues with her but she tells him to call Leo, she is busy. He is confused but she says she is hanging up now, and to go. Bucci cuts off the video. Bucci worries about Leo and the doctor says he is a drummer and he doesn’t notice things which is why they got divorced.
