Law & Order SVU Emmy Nominees: Mariska + Guest Stars

Hey, I'm coming to get my Emmy!

The nominations for the 2009 Emmy Awards are in, and Law & Order SVU is the only show in the franchise that garnered any nominations. Here is the list – and the competition.

Grey's Anatomy • No Good At Saying Sorry (One More Chance) • ABC • ABC Studios
Sharon Lawrence, as Robbie Stevens

Congratulations to all! My personal opinion – it may sound like blasphemy to SVU fans - is that Krya Sedgwick and Elizabeth Moss had far stronger performances and Mariska will likely not win. I think it is hard for anyone in the L&O franchise to be nominated or win because the often impersonal nature of their characters doesn’t allow for much depth. A pity really, because many of them are so talented. (Don’t get me started on the snubs of Sam Waterston, who had some stellar years as Jack McCoy, so much that his character was long ago considered an icon.)

If I had my pick of the guest actresses, I’d say that Brenda Blethyn’s performance was the best I had seen of any guest star in the franchise, but Carol Burnett was great as well.

The 2009 Emmy Awards will air on Sunday, September 20th at 8:00 PM ET on CBS.

  1. I don't get it. Law and Order is the longest running show on television and its treated like the unloved stepchild. It pisses me off.

  2. I doubt Mariska will win but it's great that they recognise her. As for the guest actresses, they were all amazing and I'd be happy to see any of them win.

However, I thought Brenda Blethyn's character was called Caroline Creswell, not Caroline Cantwell? Small detail, I know, but I just watched Persona again and I'm sure her name wasn't Cantwell.

  3. Maddie, I think you are right. I went back and looked at my recap, and I had the name as Cresswell there. But, even on the Internet Movie Database, she is listed under her other name in the episode, Linnie Malcolm, with no reference to her other name. I suspect that whoever put in her Emmy submission just got the name wrong, because the official Emmy press release has it as Cantwell.

  4. Allthings, you aren't being blasphemous. I'm with you completely on Kyra, and though I don't regularly watch Mad Men, I am familiar with Elizabeth's role on the show, and I think both of them have a good chance. I hope so, especially in Kyra's case. I would have loved to see Connie Britton nominated for her role on Friday Night Lights, but.....

And I'm with you on Sam Waterston. He's had sooo many good eps and good seasons over the years. And granted, he wasn't on as much the past couple of years, but there were some great eps with him, especially this last season, given the tensions with Shalvoy.

I'm sure I could look this up, but does anyone know how many nominations the Mothership has had over the years, and what those were for? Thanks!

  5. I AGREE! Mariska won't win and maybe I am sounding horrible but I am glad she won't. I think Chris Meloni gets overlooked all the time and I do think he deserves an Emmy..Mariska's performances are no better than his....just look at Swing (I know everyone hates his family episodes), Hell, Baggage, LIBERTIES!!! HELLO!!! Mariska only had one good epi which was PSTD...sorry to sound horrible but its not fair. Anyway, I am very happy Ellen Burstyn got a nom..she was AMAZING as Stabler's mom.

  7. I'm happy tht Mariska at least gets to go and be a nominee. What about those left out? Like May McDonnell, Walt Goggins, Michael Chiklis, Edward James Olmos and a slew of other actors more wothy and not even recognized for their exceptional performances. The Emmys at the end of the day (or night) is just a big old party for Hollywood to get together and party. I'll be watching a repeat of "Deadliest Catch" on that Sunday.

  8. I am happy for Mariska, but I am pulling for Glen Close from "Damages:" to win, she is phenomenal. As for the guest actress one, I'm hoping that Carol Burnett wins, I wonder why Matthew Lillard wasn't nominated for that same episode
