Mariska Hargitay Looks to Return to SVU Next Season

Mariska Hargitay (Law & Order SVU) spoke to TV Guide about her future with Law & Order SVU for next season. An excerpt from TV Guide:

“Don't worry Olivia Benson fans. Law & Order: SVU star Mariska Hargitay says she'll keep solving crimes on the NBC drama next season.

"It's looking that way," Hargitay confirmed to TV Guide Magazine on Sunday at a benefit in Los Angeles for her Joyful Heart Foundation, which supports survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and child abuse.”

Great news.

I never met the character of Olivia before season 13,but Ive really enjoyed her work seeing it afresh as a newcomer this year.

SVU without her would not be the same. Mariska has the charisma, talent and credibility. And she is still beautiful.

That being said: providing that SVU is renewed by NBC for a 14th season. I know the ratings tables keep indicating its on the fence or slipping in popularity ..Showrunner Warren Leight is so diligent about warning us that the ratings are not always accurate.I hope enough viewers tune into SVU every week when new episodes start in April.THe only way that they can get a 14th season is if the network sees the numbers so lets make it happen!

@Ohsuannah- Actually NBC already said that this show will be renewed. They already knew that SVU will be coming back for another season.

It's also not the list of the shows are in danger of being cancelled; or so call on the bubble shows.

We don't need to really worry, the ratings aren't always accurate. It doesn't depend on how many viewers tune in april; NBC could release an offical statement before then.

You never know, I wouldn't worry.

@Icy

NBC has not said that SVU has been renewed for a 14th season at this point in time.
SVU's rating have dropped considerably during this season. And expect to hear whether NBC is renewing the show until they see if the numbers will go up or further down in April. SVU's ratings are no longer good enough for that. They aren't NBC's highest rated drama anymore.

I wonder why she didnt include Andre Braugher. He created real tension on his episodes.

NBC has not officially renewed Law & Order SVU.. Law & Order fans should recall that an NBC exec also indicated L&O would be renewed, but we all know how that one really worked out.

Until NBC releases their official fall schedule and list of shows being renewed, any talk of season 14 is just that - talk!

I seem to remember hearing that Ice-T (and maybe others) were signed to contracts through a 14th season...wouldn't cancellation breach those contracts? Or is that just a Hollywood thing, that anything can be cancelled at any moment despite signed on actors?

Chris Zimmer said...

I suspect the contract is contingent on whether there are any future seasons. For example, an actor could be signed through season 14 but only if the series gets picked up for a 14th season. Just my guess.

My personal opinion is that NBC would be crazy to drop SVU but I thought the same thing about L&O and they dropped L&O anyway. And, if I recall correctly, L&O may have been pulling in better numbers on a FRIDAY NIGHT than SVU is pulling now on Wednesday night. NBC would actually be smart to bring back Law & Order!

Law and Order hadnt lost one of its most important cast members like SVU. It was pulling between 1.5 to 1.9 key demo.

Its only recent episodes of SVU that have dropped in key demo to 1.6, and they have been messing up the schedule on NBC with breaks and repeats etc. Also rem, ember SVU is up against CSI, a show which also dropped ratings when it dripped cast members but which is now picking up.They were given a chance to recover so lets hope NBC gives SVU the same chance. After all Meloni was a big loss to survive.

I think the Olivia character is developing into a really strong female lead with strong ensemble behind it and its nice to have a female lead in the Law and Order franchise because it tends towards male dominance usually.

Dont forget the killing fields of the Spring negotiations too. Thats always dangerous. People go into negotiations and never come out again!

Its a bit like pulling petals off a daisy....will it survive, wont it,will it ,wont it.....

Chris,
You're right, NBC would be smart to bring back "Law & Order" for another season or two. Just to close things up. And put Linus Roache and Andre Braugher in the same room! Man, the courtroom drama would be kinetic!

Not to thread jack the good news, but here's some more. Diane Neal tweeted not too long ago that she was filming a couple episodes of SVU. I'm guessing one of those will be Andre Braughers (presumably)last appearance.

@ddd: More like she just started watching SVU this season.
